FPL Gameweek 33 Key Tips

If any week requires some advanced planning and analysis, it’s this week. With most of the FPL community now separated into 2 camps, WC32/FH34 and WC35/FH33, the need to squeeze every ounce of value has never been higher. Although WC35 camp has drawn first blood, with strong performances from the likes of Virgil, Thiago, Bowen etc. Nico O’Reilly and Brighton’s defence were on hand to bring team WC32 back into striking distance. Plus, those who went for Scott found themselves flying even higher.

This week’s key battleground is the BB33 vs FH33 team selection. Which brings with it its own set of dilemmas and challenges.

Before we get stuck in, if you are indeed on Free Hit 33, then make sure you check out our Gameweek 33 Free Hit Team draft.

If you are after some other ways to gain rank, then make sure you check out our Gameweek 33 Differential article as well as our Gameweek 33 Best Captains article.

And as always, make sure you check out our Predicted Line-Ups and Team News Hub before locking in any changes.

Best FH33 Approach

If you are indeed on Free Hit 33 then you essentially have a couple options. If you are ahead then you can try and cover as many of the key WC32 pieces which are as follows, thus limiting the damage they can do to your team:

  • Haaland
  • Palmer
  • Verbruggen
  • Semenyo
  • Joao Pedro
  • Senesi

However, the much more fun and advisable route to go down is to take on the WC32 template straight on by targeting the differential options who were not strong features of the WC32 team. FH33 is already 1-0 up, why not go for 2-0 up. Certain players to do this with include:

  • Cherki
  • Bogle
  • Nunes
  • Donnaruma
  • Hill
  • Truffert
  • Scott
  • Gomez
  • Enzo
  • Hinshelwood

On top of differential reasoning, there is also some pretty good logic behind these selections. Man City are likely to rotate given their attacking depth. Meaning Semenyo may face reduced minutes. However, where they will not rotate is at the back; Donnaruma, Guehi, Nunes etc. On top of this, there is a very strong possibility that Arsenal vs City is a cagey, defensive oriented low scoring affair, meaning a double up at the back could be more fruitful than an attacking double up.

FH33 Key Match-Up Decisions

One thing that I will not understand is why I have seen so many FH33 drafts with only 1 Brighton player starting but 3 Leeds players… Look, it’s not even that I hate Leeds (I’m nowhere near as hot on them as others).

Brighton are playing 2 of the least in form teams in the league, particularly in the attacking sense, in Spurs and Chelsea. Chelsea have failed to score in their last 3 league games and Spurs have only managed 1 goal. That’s 1 goal total in 6 matches for Brighton’s GW33 opponents. Combine this with the fact Brighton have only conceded 3 goals in their last 6 games and all signs point to at least 1 clean sheet between the 2 matches.

Now yes, Leeds have also conceded 4 goals in their last 6 games, but Bournemouth are way more dangerous going forward than Chelsea are right now and honestly, I’d take Wolves over Spurs right now as well, so give me the Brighton double any day of the week.

Another key selection that is throwing me off is why so many teams have DCL in over a Kroupi or Welbeck. Not only did Leeds go 4 games in a row without scoring prior to squeaking past 10-man United. But DCL himself only has 1 goal in his last 11 games. He is a bad attacker in a bad attack, playing against 2 much improved defences. Add in the fact that one of their best playmakers in Stach is now out. No thanks.

Yes, Welbeck and Kroupi are rotation risks, but I feel like a lot of players are right now, and at least Welbeck and Kroupi have been finding the net recently. Both are in a European race, so there is enough incentive for Hurzeler and Iraola to play them both. If you do want to go for Leeds players, I’d lean towards defenders.

What should I do if I have already used my Free Hit?

If you have already used your Free Hit, then you should be targeting the following teams, who have good end of season fixtures and aren’t scheduled to blank.

All of which also have something to play for and likely will up until GW38. Unlike Wolves but they seem to be playing better now they have nothing to play for so honestly who knows with them. It is for these reasons that I would avoid Palace, Newcastle and Fulham assets in the long run. As Palace’s attention is on the conference league and Newcastle and Fulham will likely not be near enough to European spots to challenge.

If however you do still have plenty of transfers and your wildcard but not your Free Hit, then feel free to use your Free Transfers to target doublers this week then Wildcard in GW34 and just bench 3 City players.
