Zidane, Platini, Henry, Mbappé… is this the ultimate football lineup? See France’s greatest all-time XI and who could possibly rival them.
France have won the World Cup twice, in 1998 and 2018, reached two more finals in 2006 and 2022, and won two European Championships on top. Few nations can match that, and even fewer can match the sheer depth of talent they can call on. Building a single all-time France XI means leaving out Ballon d’Or winners and world champions. Picked in a 4-2-2-2, here is the team, followed by the question of whether it is the greatest all time XI in international football history.
| Pos | Player | Peak clubs / era | Why he makes it |
|---|---|---|---|
| GK | Hugo Lloris | Tottenham | The 2018 World Cup-winning captain and France's most-capped player, calm and commanding. |
| RB | Lilian Thuram | Parma, Juventus | France's most-capped outfielder for years and the match-winner in the 1998 semi-final. |
| CB | Laurent Blanc | Barcelona, Inter | Le President: an elegant, ball-playing centre-back at the heart of the 1998 triumph. |
| CB | Marcel Desailly | Milan, Chelsea | The Rock: a powerful, unbeatable defender and a Champions League winner with two clubs. |
| LB | Patrice Evra | Monaco, Juventus, Manchester United | One of the best left backs in Premier League history. A mainstay of France and United for a decade. |
| CM | Patrick Vieira | Arsenal, Juventus | A towering, all-action midfielder and the driving force of Arsenal's Invincibles. |
| CM | Zinedine Zidane | Juventus, Real Madrid | The greatest French player of all time and one of the finest the game has ever seen. |
| RAM | Antoine Griezmann | Athletico Madrid | As far as national team performances go, Griezmann is one of the all-time greats. A true servant and legend. |
| LAM | Michel Platini | Juventus | A three-time Ballon d'Or winner and the peerless playmaker of the 1980s. |
| ST | Kylian Mbappe | PSG, Real Madrid | A generational talent, a 2018 world champion and a World Cup final hat-trick scorer. Potentially the best international footballer of all time. |
| ST | Thierry Henry | Arsenal, Barcelona | Electric, elegant and prolific, one of the finest forwards of his generation. |

Henry leading the line with Mbappe is honestly stuff of nightmares for defenders, the sheer technical ability and pace on display would leave defenders with no chance. Griezmann seems to turn into the best player on the planet whenever he wears the national team jersey so a supporting duo of him and Platini would cause even more hell for defences. This is before you even get to the two midfielders of Zidane and Vieira, whose games arguably balance each other out perfectly, with Kante ready to come off the bench for even more balance. Not to mention they sit in front of one of the greatest, if not the greatest, back fours ever assembled. Littered with serial winners and ballers. In front of France’s most capped player Lloris.
The case for yes. This is a team with no weakness. The 1998 back four is arguably the finest a nation has ever fielded, shielded by the relentless Vieira and Kante. Ahead of them sit two of the greatest midfielders the game has seen in Zidane and Vieira, the pace and finishing of Mbappe and Henry, and a goalkeeper and captain in Lloris who is their most capped ever. There is world-class quality, and world-class depth, in every single position.
The case for no. Honestly, there is very little to say. The only real question is how they all work together. Although with options like Kante, Makelele and Deschamps on the bench, I’m sure they’d have no issue. If you were to nitpick you could say that other nations have had far superior all time keepers like Casillas, Neuer, Buffon etc. Although everywhere else on the pitch they are arguably the best.
The verdict. I think it is hard to argue France’s all time XI is the greatest international side of all time.
This is a selection piece, so it is one defensible XI rather than the only one. The fun is in the argument.
