Who are Canada and who is in the squad?

Jesse Marsch took charge in 2024, reached the 2024 Copa America semi-finals and has built a resilient, hard-pressing side. Captain Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich is the star, although he is racing back from a hamstring injury and is set to miss the opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Juventus striker Jonathan David is the main goal threat with 39 international goals, supported by Tajon Buchanan and Cyle Larin, while Stephen Eustaquio and Ismael Kone anchor the midfield. After finishing bottom of a tough group in 2022, Canada are targeting a first ever World Cup win.

What is Canada’s group and fixture schedule?

Canada are in Group B with Switzerland, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar, and play all three group games at home in Toronto and Vancouver. The top two, plus the eight best third placed teams, advance to the Round of 32.

They open the group against Bosnia and Herzegovina at BMO Field on 12 June, face Qatar in Vancouver on 18 June, and finish against group favourites Switzerland. With home advantage and a winnable group, qualification is a realistic target.

What is Canada’s predicted line up?

Marsch favours a 4-2-3-1, sometimes a flat 4-4-2, with Jonathan David leading the line and Eustaquio and Kone holding midfield. Davies normally operates from left-back, but with the captain missing the opener, Marsch will reshuffle his defence and lean on his attacking options.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1):

St. Clair; Laryea, Bombito, Cornelius, Johnston; Eustaquio, Kone; Buchanan, Osorio, Shaffelburg; David

This is a prediction, not a confirmed team sheet, and reflects the opener with Alphonso Davies sidelined by a hamstring injury. When fit, Davies starts at left-back and reshapes the side. Maxime Crepeau is also in contention to start in goal.

Canada One to Watch – Ismael Kone

Few players have benefited more from their coach’s guidance than Ismaël Koné. The midfielder was dropped during the Copa América after struggling to influence games, but he has since enjoyed an excellent spell with Sassuolo in Serie A and developed into a dynamic box-to-box presence for Canada. His time in Italy has strengthened the defensive side of his game, improving both his discipline and tactical awareness. Koné is expected to partner Stephen Eustáquio in Canada’s key double-pivot midfield, forming one of the team’s most important partnerships.

How will Canada play? Style and tactics

Marsch demands a high-pressing, aggressive style, usually in a 4-2-3-1. Eustaquio and Kone provide the legs and ball progression in a double pivot, while Davies, when fit, offers pace and overlapping width from left-back.

The team has been resilient under Marsch, dropping only one of their previous 20 matches across one run and scoring at a healthy rate. Home support at BMO Field and BC Place is a genuine factor, and Jonathan David’s finishing is the key to how far they can go.

What is Canada’s recent form?

Canada have been in strong form under Marsch, including a goalless draw with Colombia that showed they can handle elite opposition. They reached the 2024 Copa America semi-finals and have built consistency in the build-up to a home tournament.

Their pre-tournament send-off matches were against Uzbekistan in Edmonton and the Republic of Ireland in Montreal. The big question mark is the fitness of Alphonso Davies, who is set to miss the opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
