Fasten your seatbelts as we’re approaching the penultimate Gameweek of the season! It’s time to apply some finishing touches to the fun journey this FPL season has been, so here are three candidates who could help you climb to the mini league summits:

Watkins – TOT (H)

Man like Ollie is back on the shortlist as he leads the line for Villa, who are chasing consecutive UCL campaigns. Facing a Tottenham side that would have both eyes on the Europa league final coming just days after this fixture. Spurs have looked very shaky in defence the entire season and now with the expected heavy rotation they could leak a few more goals in! Spurs have conceded 14 goals in their last 5 PL games and rank 17th for xGC while keeping only 6 clean sheets the entire season (zero in their last 10!)

Watkins has had a hot/cold season but is looking in good shape once again with better xMins and 4 attacking returns from the last 5 games. He ranks 7th for goals scored, 6th for xG, 5th for nPxG, 14th for assists, and 10th for Penalty Area Touches. Villa have had a solid season so far and are ranked 9th for goals scored, 10th for xG, and 3rd for Big Chances Created.

The UCL qualification carrot is dangling in front of Unai’s men and they’ll be eager to give it their all to clinch it. This spices up the fixture for Watkins further as would be looking to take advantage of the high line that Spurs have been playing this season. And adding his spot kick duties make him a very strong candidate for this week’s captaincy!

Palmer – MUN (H)

On a consistent theme of one team aiming for UCL qualification and their opponent preparing for the Europa League final, next up is a forgotten favorite, Cole Palmer as he takes on Manchester United who have conceded 12 goals in their last 5 PL games with no clean sheets and are currently ranked 13th for xGC. Despite Amorim’s comments we believe he will rotate the squad to keep his best players fresh for the final, giving more chances for the Chelsea attack to take advantage of the defensive vulnerabilities and inexperience of the sporadically featured players.

Palmer has had a slow second half of the season but now is the time for him to step up for his team and lead them back to the UCL next season. He currently ranks 8th for goals scored, 4th for xG, 6th for nPxG, 10th for assists, 3rd for xA, 2nd for Big Chances Created and 21st for Penalty Area Touches. The Chelsea attack has looked good for most of the season and they are currently ranked 7th for goals scored, 2nd for xG, and 2nd for Big Chances Created.

This fixture last season was a highlight for Palmer as he bagged a hattrick including a goal in the 101st minute to seal all three points for Chelsea. He certainly has all the makings to trouble the United defence all game long with his creativity and directness. The set piece duties also help lifting his ceiling for this fixture and make him an excellent candidate for the armband this Gameweek.

Wood – WHU (A)

And to wrap things up, it’s another fixture where one team is fighting for a European spot for next season and this time their opponent is truly at the beach. That brings Chris Wood to the shortlist who leads the Forest attack against West Ham who rank 16th for xGC and have 31 goals in 13 games against the current top 7 in the PL table including a resounding 3-0 for Forest in the reverse fixture!

Chris Wood rewarded his owners and captainers (wink wink) in GW36 with another goal taking his tally up to 20 goals for the season, and he is now ranked 4th for goals scored, 8th for xG, and 12th for nPxG. Forest’s reliance on him was again visible in the game against Leicester and proves that Wood has been an absolute beast in an otherwise attack side leading them to chase the European journey. Forest are currently ranked 9th for goals scored, 15th for xG, and 15th for Big Chances Created.

West Ham are among Wood’s favorite opponents as he has scored 8 goals and assisted another 2 in the 15 games that he’s played against them. He’s also on the cusp of a podium finish in the golden boot race which would add more fuel to his fire of playing Chanpions League football. A weak defence, an in form player and with a big prize to play for – sound like the ingredients to another big haul which make a strong case for Wood to be your captain for this Gameweek.
