The final three weeks of the season are upon us and it’s time to put the finishing touches to what has been an exciting season! Here are three candidates for your FPL Captain who could help you get a massive boost to claim victory in your mini leagues:

De Bruyne – SOU (A)

We sang it last week, and we’ll sing it again – Oh Kevin de Bruyneee! The midfield maestro rewarded his managers with a double digit haul in GW35. He is looking in fine touch as he prepares to take on the infamous Southampton defence that ranks 20th for xGC and has conceded 26 goals in 9 games against the teams currently ranked in the top 5 for xG!

De Bruyne came in clutch for City, who are chasing a UCL spot, with the winner against Wolves and now ranks 13th for assists, 11th for xA (2nd for xA/90), and 10th for Big Chances Created. City also seem to have found a spring in their step as they are now on a 4 match winning streak with an aggregate scoreline of 9-3! Their attack currently ranks 2nd for goals scored, 3rd for xG, and 4th for Big Chances Created.

De Bruyne has shown that he can step up in attack when it matters to deliver the finish in front of goal on top of his excellent creative display, and now with Haaland being back to fitness, his ceiling gets a further lift. Erling’s explosiveness and directness in front of goal can yield in more attacking returns for Kevin, making him an excellent candidate for the armband this Gameweek!

Mbeumo – IPS (A)

One brings two! Mbeumo also features on the shortlist for the second week running as he takes on an Ipswich side that has been relegated and ranks 19th for xGC while conceding 40 goals in 17 games at home! With 10 goals in their last 3 games, Brentford would be eager to take on Ipswich as they keep the pressure on the teams around them in a quest for a top 8 finish.

While it did seem underwhelming given the context of the game, Mbeumo did deliver yet another attacking return in GW35 and he now ranks 5th for goals scored, 25th for xG, 33rd for nPxG, 23rd for assists, 25th for xA, 4th for Big Chances Created, and 14th for Penalty Area Touches. Brentford’s recent hot streak has seen them climb the ranks to now rank 6th for goals scored, 8th for xG, and 5th for Big Chances Created which could prove to be a handful against a defence as vulnerable as Ipswich Town’s.

Mbeumo has delivered BIG against the teams that have been relegated this season and has 64 points from 5 games against them, and now will be looking for another strong performance to capture the amazing season he has had. His overall attacking play, creativity, and set piece duties make him a very strong candidate for this week’s captaincy.

Wood – LEI (H)

Speaking of consistent performers this season, here’s another FPL favorite of the season – Chris Wood! He completes the list this week as he takes on Leicester City who similar to the other two targeted teams have been very shaky defence ranking 18th for xGC (19th for xGC away) and have conceded 25 goals in 11 games against the current top 6 in the league.

Wood’s consistency is backed by his underlying numbers that see him rank 4th for goals scored, 14th for xG, and 9th for nPxG. Forest’s remarkable run this season owes a lot of credit to Wood’s clinical form in front of goal and he’s helped carry the Forest attack to rank 11th for goals scored, 15th for xG, and 15th for Big Chances Created. Once again highlighting the importance of Wood in what otherwise seems to be an average attack.

Wood has scored 37 points in 5 games against the relegated teams and now will be eager to get back on the scoresheet and break the 20 league goals barrier for this season! Nottingham’s charge for European spots remains hot and as we saw above the reliance on goals would heavily depend on Wood leading him to get plenty of chances against a weak defence and thereby making him a great contender for this week’s captaincy!

Thank you for reading our article! Are you sticking with the FPL favorites or going for a differential in a quest to get some big green arrows this Gameweek?
