Two double GWs now followed by a blank Gameweek! The business end of the FPL season is in full swing, so here are three candidates who will help you edge closer to clinching the top spots and the bragging rights in your mini leagues:

Salah – TOT (H)

With just one assist in the last 5 Gameweeks, things became interesting as managers couldn’t just set and forget captaincy on the king. But now as he takes on a struggling Tottenham side, who would now be entirely focused on the Europa league, he would be eager to jump out of the murky waters and be back on the scoresheet. Spurs have just one win in their last 7 games and have failed to keep a clean sheet during this period despite facing attacks much less potent than Liverpool’s.

Regardless of the slump in recent form, Salah outshines every single player in the league and is ranked 1st for goals scored, 1st for xG, 2nd for nPxG, 1st for assists, 3rd for xA, 1st for Big Chances Created, and 1st for Penalty Area Touches! He’s been an incredible leader of a stellar attack that’s now led the team to be within touching distance of the trophy being ranked 1st for goals scored, 1st for xG, and 1st for Big Chances Created. A Salah goal to seal it would now be the cherry on top of all the celebrations.

Tottenham is one of his favorite teams to play against as he boasts a strong record of 15 goals and 5 assists in 23 games, a glimpse of which we saw in the absolute goal fest of a reverse fixture, where Salah scored 2 and assisted 2 in a 6-3 win. The occasion is set and the opponent is favorable for Salah to dazzle at Anfield once again, making him a strong candidate for this week’s captaincy.

Isak – IPS (H)

Another popular FPL asset who’s been underwhelming lately while basking in the glory of his teammates attacking returns. Isak is now up against Ipswich Town who have been very weak defensively all season and tend to concede a lot of goals and chances through the middle. Ipswich rank 19th for xGC (20th in away games) and have conceded 13 goals in their last 5 games while having kept only two clean sheets the entire season!

Isak has been a major force this season in an impressive Newcastle attack and he currently ranks 2nd for goals scored, 3rd for xG, 3rd for nPxG, 18th for assists, 19th for Big Chances Created, and 4th for Penalty Area Touches. Newcastle have also been on the up and rank 3rd for goals scored, 5th for xG, and 7th for Big Chances Created, and are now pushing hard to return to the UCL which makes this fixture further enticing.

Isak’s record against the promoted teams has been phenomenal. He has 6 goals and 2 assists in 5 games which led him to score 48 points (9.6 points/game) with his biggest haul of the season so far coming against Ipswich in the reverse fixture where he scored a hattrick! As Newcastle look to bounce back from the defeat against Villa they would have their attack on full throttle, and with teammates contributing well in attack, the focal point Isak becomes a great pick for the armband this Gameweek.

Cunha – LEI (H)

It’s taken him 34 weeks to do so but Matheus Cunha finally makes his debut on the captaincy shortlist, as he takes on a Leicester side who got relegated last week. Leicester looked shaky all season and rank 18th for xGC and 19th for goals conceded (20th in away games) making the fixture more juicy for a Wolves side that have won their last 5 games on the bounce with an aggregate scoreline of 10-4!

The attack for Wolves has to some extent been their saving grace this season as they rank 12th for goals scored with 48 goals, out of which 20 have been scored against the teams in the bottom 5 for xGC. On an individual level, Cunha has done well in a limited setup as he ranks 8th for goals scored, 32nd for xG, 25th for nPxG, 15th for Big Chances Created, and 36th for Penalty Area Touches.

In his 3 appearances this season against the promoted teams Cunha amassed a staggering 30 points by scoring three goals and assisting one. This time of the season is when such players can become exciting contenders for captaincy especially for those who are chasing some gaps in their mini leagues. Strong player, weak opponent, bold choice!
