• With Van Hecke returning from suspension, I think Hurzeler will feel more confident shifting back to the 4-2-3-1 system he has used a lot over the past 2 months.
• Ayari has been favoured recently over Gomez as Baleba’s partner in midfield.
• O’Riley has started the last 2 games as 10/advanced midfielder and has performed fairly well. Hurzeler may be looking to bed in a young player he likes in order to prepare him for a larger role next season.
• Mitoma returns from the minor knock that kept him out of the squad for Brighton’s 2-2 draw against Leicester in GW32.
• Hurzeler has not started Joao Pedro and Welbeck together when playing 4-2-3-1 since the early months of the season. When Brighton won 6 of 8 games between GW21-28, Joao Pedro started as the lone striker in 5 of those wins. He gets the nod.

• It has been difficult to predict what system and team selection Pep is going to favour game to game as he has been searching for answers to various problems. In City’s 5-2 thrashing of Palace, he may have found the set up and starting lineup that can help City close out the season strong.
• Nunes comes in for Lewis against a tall and physical Everton side.
• It seems Pep wants to stick with the shift of Gvardiol to centre-back with O’Reilly playing left-back.
• Foden has returned to training and will be available, and could replace De Bruyne in the 10 role or Gundogan in that left sided role he played against Palace.

• It is a toss up as to whether Soler shifts wide and Bowen plays as the striker, or Bowen plays on the wing with Fullkrug starting up-front.

• With a new interim manager, it is tough to know what he prefers in terms of system and player profile in certain roles. However, going off the starting lineup he put out in GW32, and the resulting 3-0 loss, I think one potential shift he makes is having Fernandes play a more advanced role with Downes returning from suspension and starting in the deeper midfield role alongside Ugochukwu.

• Now that Villa are out of the Champions League after a heroic effort and near comeback against PSG in midweek, Emery will likely rotate less and play his strongest 14 or 15 players the majority of the remaining minutes this season, as Villa are in the thick of a battle for one of those top 5 Champions League spots.
• Pau starts alongside Konsa. Emery has opted for Mings over Pau in league games but I wonder if that changes with the league being the sole focus.
• Against Newcastle’s physical midfield, I think Emery opts for the balance of quality in and out of possession of Kamara alongside Tielemans with McGinn in the 10 role over Asensio.
• I think Watkins gets the nod over Rashford against Newcastle, with fresher legs and he has played well when given the chance recently. He is also better out of possession and at pressing than Rashford is and that will be key against Newcastle.

• Pereira failed to really make an impact in the 10 role against Bournemouth. Silva has been switching between Smith-Rowe and Pereira in that role depending on form, matchups and fitness. I just have a feeling in a London Derby, with Smith-Rowe being an Arsenal boy and understanding the stakes, after a few games out of the starting lineup – Silva may want to use that motivation and the fresh legs.
• Raul Jimenez returns to the starting lineup after Muniz was wasteful against Bournemouth.

• White starts with Timber getting a rest, with his fitness for PSG the priority.
• Partey started both games against Brentford and PSG over the past week, and so is rested here. Jorginho comes in.
• Odegaard returns to the starting XI.
• Saka is rested here. It is more likely he plays against Crystal Palace, optimising his rest between games.

Man City vs Aston Villa (Tuesday 8pm kick-off):

• Lewis comes in for Nunes due to natural rotation.
• Foden starts in the no 10 role replacing De Bruyne who will likely need a rest. Given at the beginning of the GW Foden was just returning from injury, it makes more sense for Pep to do it this way around..
• Grealish and Savinho come in to play on the wings for the older Gundogan and young McAtee with only 3 days in between games.

• Mings comes in for Pau with a short turnaround in between games.
• Maatsen replaces the older Digne in the starting lineup.
• Onana replaces Kamara alongside Tielemans. McGinn gets a rest and Asensio replaces him in the 10 role.
• Rashford starts up-front.

 

Arsenal vs Crystal Palace (Wednesday 8pm kick-off):

• Saka, Timber and Partey return to the starting XI. This is a perfect scenario for Arteta’s preferred XI for PSG to get minutes and sharpness in but plenty of rest with 6 days between the games.

• An unchanged starting lineup for Palace from their game against Bournemouth earlier in the GW.
