Our GW8 Tottenham vs Aston Villa predicted lineups, preview, team overviews, H2H record, betting odds and predicted score.
A battle between two teams that are undefeated in their last 4 league games, both winning two and drawing 2. However both teams are towards the top of different halves of the table because Tottenham started the season well while Villa had a historically poor start to the season. At one point they were the only team in England’s 4 top flight league’s to have not scored a goal. The Thomas Frank era has began very well and Spurs are sitting pretty right now in 3rd, only 2 points off bitter rivals Arsenal in 1st. A title race is probably not in the cards but after picking a good 3 points before the international break over a Leeds team playing well to start the season, Frank and Tottenham will want to continue that momentum and really cement themselves a favourite to lock up one of the 5 Champions League spots for next season. Aston Villa have recovered well after that historically poor start to their season. They have won their last 2 league games over Fulham and Burnley and have won 4 straight in all competitions with wins over Bologna and Feyenoord in the Europa League also. The heat around Emery’s seat has cooled and Villa will look to carry that momentum into a big game between two of England’s biggest teams. Now they have to take on a Tottenham team that has been moulded into a much better out of possession and defensive team that now has the likes Europe’s top young attacking talents the likes of Kudus, Simons, and Kolo Muani who are additions to veteran’s like Richarlison. It should be a great game for the neutral and deserved to be a game shown live on TV, and will be a fun tactical battle between two top managers with plenty of top talents on show.

This has been a fairly even battle over recent years despite Spurs chopping and changing Managers and playing styles. There have also been no draws in any of the 12 meetings between these two sides since Aston Villa were originally promoted in this era in the 2019/2020 season. Every single game has been won by one of the two sides. That’s quite a streak. Over their last 5 meetings, Aston Villa do have the slight edge with 3 wins, and Tottenham with 2 wins. Not only should we expect there to be a winner of this game but we should expect goals – there have been 17 goals across the last 5 games in the league between Villa and Spurs, that is more than 3 per game.

Speaking on Friday Thomas Frank stated that “Kolo Muani has trained now for two weeks with the team, so that’s good. He looks better and better. He will be in contention for the squad for tomorrow, so that’s positive”, so that wording suggests the squad yes, but the starting lineup, no. Which is to be expected with a new loan player who has not played any minutes yet. He is likely the most talented striker in Tottenham’s squad and could in the coming weeks make a case to start.
Frank also revealed “Yves Bissouma unfortunately had a situation with the national team, I think everyone saw that, unfortunately, so he got a ligament injury to his ankle. That’ll keep him out for weeks”.
Speaking on Dominic Solanke, Thomas Frank informed the media that “Dom has progressed well after the surgery. [He has] been on the pitch, I actually don’t know if it was today, but it definitely was the two days before that… He’s still training on his own… We’ll take it day by day and week by week to see how he progresses…But that’s not to say that it will take him three months to get up to pace.” Good news on Solanke despite the fact he is clearly still at leat 2 weeks again given he is still not training with the team.
Against weaker opposition in their last 2 league games, facing Leeds and Wolves, Frank opted for a double pivot of Palhinha and Bentancur allowing Simons or Bergvall to play as a true 10, but against better opposition like Villa, I think Frank may opt to bring Sarr back in to the team who was performing at a high level to start the season but then picked up a knock that halted momentum. That way there are 3 true midfielders in the lineup, who will provide more out of possession and defensively than having Simons in that central role.
Porro and Udogie started at full-back in GW7. Spence and Udogie started in GW6. Clearly there will be some rotation between these 3 players given Tottenham have plenty of midweek games between the Champions League and domestic cup competitions, as well as Spence’s ability to play either side.
Tel started the last league game and scored in the 2-1 win over Leeds, at least making a very good case to start again in GW8 vs Aston Villa. However Richarlison could come straight back in to the starting XI for this game and I would not be surprised. Solanke returning also makes things even more unclear, but the coming weeks should clear up how Frank views the pecking order for his starting striker spot.
Udogie: Started the last 2 league games, and I think he starts once again.
Spence: Potentially first name on the teamsheet out of the 3 top full-backs. Started for England and played well.
Bergvall: Instantly brought the balance to the midfield that was missing against Bournemouth, and played well. Should start.
Simons: Did play as the 10 against Leeds, but I think against better teams he plays LW with a true midfielder coming in to the XI.
Kolo Muani: Should make the squad for the first time since joining on loan.
Solanke: Back on grass but doing individual training still.

Good news and the news Aston Villa fans wanted – Ollie Watkins should be fit to start against Tottenham on Sunday. Unai Emery revealed “Yes, we will try him again tomorrow but he will be ready for Sunday”. There were no other fitness or injury updates from Emery on Friday so it would seem that things are as they were prior to the international break.
Mings suffered an ankle injury against Fulham that is expected to sideline him until at least after the international break if not longer. Pau Torres will start in his place as he did against Burnley.
Ollie Watkins injured himself after hitting his shin against the post in England’s friendly vs Wales last week. He has withdrawn from the squad and will get treatment from the Villa medical staff over this week. It does not seem to be a serious injury and Tuchel even said after the game that “It was very, very painful, but as I understand it now, it’s only painful, so no harm done. Watkins should be fit to start vs Tottenham given he has had over a week to recover from the knock.
Sancho missed Villa’s last game due to illness but should be available again.
According to the Athletic on October 8th, Tielemans is set to miss 5 more weeks out injured.
Malen seems to have finally found his way in to Emery’s preferred starting XI.
Mings: Could return after the international break but not certain to.
Torres: Will start in Mings’ place.
Watkins: Injured during England game vs Wales but not serious, expected to be fit to start on Sunday.
Malen: Now a preferred started at RW.
Sancho: Should be available.
Tielemans: Out 5 more weeks.
