The Best FPL Gameweek 34 Captains

With some of the usual suspects not in action this week, the captains pool is a lot smaller than usual. Now yes, this does mean it is even harder to go against Fernandes, but there are still some really solid differential options for those chasing rank.

Bruno Fernandes vs BRE (H)

It’s hard to bet against this man at the moment. Safe as house is one phrase that comes to mind.  He has 2 blanks in his last 15 starts in the league. Just 2… He has 8 goals, 19 assists, and xGI per 90 of 0.7, pens, 90 minutes per game, good Defcon possibility and a top 3 attack in the league. He is the best attacking asset in the game right now and it’s not even close. A great bet for captaincy every week.

Gabriel Magalhaes vs NEW (H)

It is important to take Arsenal’s last 2 games with a pinch of salt. Both City and indeed Bournemouth are 2 of the best attacks in the league at present. Newcastle, on the other hand, are one of the league’s worst. They have lost 3 on the bounce and now find themselves just 3 points ahead of Leeds, who were in a relegation scrap a few weeks ago.

Gabriel already has 8 attacking returns and is a perennial threat from set-pieces. Combine this with his solid Defcon output and clean sheet percentage, and you could easily be looking at a double digit haul this week.

Virgil Van Dijk vs CRY (H)

You know it’s a down week when 2 of the best captaincy options are defenders. Nonetheless, Van Dijk is here or very similar reasons to Gabriel. Like Gabriel, he is also a perennial threat from set-pieces, registering 4 goals and an assist already this season. His set-piece threat has also been ramped up recently, averaging an xGI of 0.31 per 90 over the last 8 games. Combine this with his Defcons per 90 of 9.45 and like Gabriel, Van dijk also has a ton of ways he can score points. Palace have also scored the 3rd least goals in the entire league this season, meaning his clean sheet chances are also very high.

Ollie Watkins vs FUL (A)

Watkins now has 4 returns in his last 3 games and is showing no signs of slowing down. Villa now have 7 in their last 3 and are fresh off putting 4 past Sunderland, in what was a refreshingly high scoring game. The Villa attack is purring right now, and they now have their sights set on a Fulham side who have now slipped into the top 6 for most xGA.

If Villa can continue this attacking hot streak then there could easily be a haul in there for Watkins.
