The Best FPL Gameweek 21 Captains

For those keeping score at home that’s now 3 blanks in a row for Haaland. Which can either mean one of 2 things. Another blank or a mega-haul.

There are not as many great captaincy options this week, not least due to some key injuries. However, in times like this, this can only increase the EO and potential gains, as people will likely spread the armband out more and more.

Make sure before locking in any decisions you check in with our Predicted Line-Ups page before locking anything in. Also make sure you check who FPL Olympian has gone with and try and avoid them as well.

If you are after more great differential options in the form of individual options then make sure you also check out our Gameweek 21 differentials article for some hidden gems.

Anyway, without further ado, let’s get stuck into this week’s best captaincy options.

Erling Haaland vs BHA (H)

Brighton currently sits in the bottom 7 for lowest xGA, on the same number as Forest.

Since 2019, Brighton v Man City fixtures have averaged a whopping 3.54 goals per game. Meaning we are likely in for another goal-fest.

As a result, at first glance it would appear as if Gameweek 21 is another week where we must lean towards the Norwegian machine, not least because of some uninspiring other options.

We also know that this man doesn’t stay quiet for long and will be more than keen to get back among the goals. With some key defensive injuries along the backline, City may also find themselves conceding even more, further increasing the likelihood of this being a goal fest.

James Tarkowski/Michael Keane vs WOL (H)

Now this is a controversial but very sneaky one. Everton are far from loaded with attacking talent at the moment, not least considering AFCON and injuries to key players like Dewsbury-hall. However, what they do have, is a rugged pair of centre backs. This week’s edition of whose playing Wolves takes us to Merseyside. Now yes, Brentford did just stick 4 past Everton, but Everton’s overall defensive record is far better than that 1 outing showed. They have managed 6 clean sheets in their last 10 appearances and now play the league’s worst attack by both goals scored and xG metrics. When you add in the fact that both are DefCon beasts and set piece threats, suddenly this starts to make sense from a captaincy standpoint.

Bruno Guimaraes vs LEE (H)

Something about the Bruno name means these boys love to have different avenues to points. Bruno was unlucky to be stripped of his DefCons in their last outing but nonetheless, remains a fantastic DefCon candidate every time he steps on the pitch. Leeds have conceded the 3rd most goals away from home this year and show little to no signs of improving. With Tonali now covering the 6 position, Bruno has been given full license to get forward and join attacks. With 7 goals and 4 assists already this season, Bruno has shown not just an appetite for goals but also a penchant for assisting. Whether he is laying up teammates or crashing the box himself. He has also seen an increased presence on set pieces of late including corners, which we know Newcastle can be very effective from. He just has so many routes to points and presents a very high floor every week. A mini Bruno Fernandes in that sense.

Matheus Cunha vs BUR (A)

Has Amorim been sacked? Yes. Are United all over the place? Yes. But are they playing Burnley? Also, Yes. With the 3rd highest goals conceded and dead last lowest xGA, Cunha is our choice for this week’s edition of whose playing Burnley. With 4 returns in his last 6, Cunha has entered a good stretch of form. With stars like Mbeumo, Bruno and Amad all set to miss a few weeks, Cunha has found himself in the focal point of United’s attack. He also carries an xGI per 90 of 0.47 into the Burnley fixture. A great option this week.

Such absences mean Cunha is also likely on penalty duty.

Jarrod Bowen vs NFO (H)

There is no 2 ways around it, West Ham looked abysmal against Wolves. Luckily they have another lower tier opposition this week in 17th place Nottingham Forest. Forest remain in the bottom 5 for both goals conceded and lowest xGA. They have conceded at least 2 in their last 3 games meaning even West ham have a good chance of scoring. With 8 G/A this season Bowen seems to be the only player capable of consistent production on the team, and is a solid differential captain should you so choose.

Morgan Rogers/Ollie Watkins vs CRY (A)

Honestly the way Villa are playing right now it is hard to doubt them against one. They have scored 2+ in 7 of their last 8. More importantly, Villa’s goalscoring trends seem to not give a monkeys who they are playing against. Beating the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea, City, United etc. As a result, we can almost throw everything we know about fixtures out the window when it comes to them and just look at their form. Palace are winless in their last 7, and Villa have won 12 of their last 13. You do the math on that one.

If you have Watkins we would go him over Rogers but if you only have Rogers he is still a great option.
