The Best FPL Gameweek 16 Free Hit Team

If you are confused as to why your FPL team suddenly has 5 Free Transfers then make sure you check out our guide on why you have them and how to use them.

The short answer is AFCON, so make sure you also check out our updated list on exactly which players will be heading to the tournament.

With the huge influx of free transfers now available, whether you have the chip or not, GW16 could prove the opportune time to essentially Free Hit. Particularly if you plan on playing your wildcard in the upcoming Game weeks.

As usual we have been targeting the bottom 3 teams, and this week it just so happens that 2 of the top 3 are playing 2 of the bottom 3. Normally a recipe for success in FPL.

Make sure you check in with the Predicted Line-Ups before locking in any moves, as many players may be subject to a rest following a congested fixture schedule.

Anyway, without further ado, lets get stuck into our best Gameweek 16 Free hit team.

Goalkeepers

David Raya – £6m

No surprises to see this man still here. Arsenal now take on the worst attack in the league, at the emirates. Wolves sit bottom for both goals and xG. Absolute no brainer here.

Martin Dubravka – £4m

Not much needs to be said here. A starting keeper for £4m.

Defenders

Jurrien Timber – £6.4m

With Gabriel, Saliba and Mosquera still banged up, Calafiori suspended and a decent rest under his belt in the Brentford fixture, it’s hard to see a world where Timber doesn’t start this weekend. We already mentioned how poor the Wolves attack is, but their attack is also one of the worst in the league. Making a player like Timber who also has a propensity for attacking returns with 5 already this season an excellent option. Not just for a Free hit team but also for this week’s captaincy.

Matty Cash – £4.8m

Villa have been absolutely flying recently, winning 9 of their last 10 games. They now take on a West Ham side who sit bottom 4 for both goals and xG. West Ham have also been playing a much more defensive style of football under Nuno, making this a much better fixture for defenders than Villa attackers. Cash also has 2 returns in his last 2 and is absolutely nailed, making him the pick of the bunch. Especially at only £4.8m.

Ezri Konsa – £4.4m

At only £4.4m, Konsa is our next man in. We mentioned how favourable the match up is for Villa defenders, so it would be rude not to double up. Like Cash he is absolutely nailed but comes at the even cheaper cost of only £4.4m. Pau Torres is also a solid option at only £4.3m and honestly there’s not much between either of them.

Andersen – £4.5m

A DefCon monster averaging 11 Defensive Contributions a game. Andersen now takes on one of the league’s worst attacks in Burnley. Who currently sit 2nd last for xG and bottom 3 for goals scored. Andersen hits that sweet spot between high clean sheet and high DefCon potential for GW16, making him a fantastic option this week.

Joe Rodon – £4.1m

This spot can be filled by whoever your favourite cheap defender is. We just have Rodon in here as we only had £4.1m left in the bank. He will be occupying a bench spot regardless.

Midfielders

Bukayo Saka – £10.2m

Rounding out the Arsenal triple up and a sure-fire candidate for captaincy this week is Bukayo Saka. With 4 returns in his last 5 and an average xGI of 0.64 over the same stretch, the Arsenal star seems to be hitting a bit of form. Just in time for the best fixture on the calendar, Wolves at home. We saw what Man United’s attack did to Wolves on Monday, so an attack as good as Arsenal’s should also be positioned to take full advantage. A mega haul could be on the cards for Saka.

Phil Foden – £8.6m

The fact Foden has risen by £0.6m in just over a week should tell you everything you need to know about the form this man is in. With 5 goals and an assist in his last 3 games, he’s potentially the most in form player in the league. Even against a stubborn Palace defence who have conceded the 2nd least goals in the league, it seems like there’s no stopping Foden at the moment. The only thing that could stop him is a potential rest, given he has started every single league game so far this season. Although his early sub against Sunderland may help mitigate those concerns. Nonetheless, it is vital to maintain bench cover just in case. Or check in with Andy Martin closer to the deadline…

Bruno Fernandes – £9.1m

I imagine Bruno will be a very popular pick following his 18-point outing against Wolves. However, it is important to remember that it was against Wolves… So don’t go crazy and think he’s a better candidate for captaincy than an Arsenal asset. Nonetheless he is still a fantastic option for a free hit and indeed any FPL team given how many routes to points he has. Goals, Assists, DefCons, Penalties, Bonus Points. You name it, he can do it. Bournemouth have also conceded 13 in their last 6 even with the clean sheet against Chelsea, so there could still be plenty of attacking returns on the cards for Bruno.

Morgan Rogers – £7.0m

Completing the Villa triple up is Morgan Rogers. Even though West Ham only conceded 1 goal each against the high powered Man United and Brighton attacks, I would not consider them a solid defence by any stretch. Keeping only 1 clean sheet this entire season in Gameweek 3. They have still conceded the 3rd most goals this season and sit 2nd bottom for lowest xGA. Add in the way Villa have been playing and this could be very messy.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall – £5.1m

An absolute bargain at only £5.1m. Dewsbury-Hall has been a bright spark in Everton’s attack, with 5 returns in his last 5. He now takes on a Chelsea side who, to say it politely, have had a very concerning last 2 outings against Leeds and Bournemouth. Bournemouth and particularly Evanilson could have easily scored and Leeds took them to the cleaners. These were not flukey goals either as Chelsea conceded a combined 3.62 xGA over the 2 games. Granted both were away from home but nonetheless paint the picture of a struggling defence.

Forwards

Thiago – £7.0m

Those who watched the Spurs game will know that even though Thiago registered a blank, he could easily have scored and was still at the heart of Brentford’s attack. Leeds have conceded the 3rd most goals in the league this season and Brentford have been top 6 for xG. Thiago has been particularly destructive at home, scoring 5 in his last 3 at the GTech. So expect him to get back to scoring ways following two tricky away blanks.

Erling Haaland – £14.5m

Regardless of who he’s playing it is nigh on impossible to leave this man out. Even against one of the best defences in the league. The man has 15 goals and 3 assists in 15 games ffs. He also got a brief break at the end of the Sunderland game which bodes well for his starting potential.

Raul Jimenez – £6.2m

This week’s edition of whose playing Burnley takes us to West London and Raul Jimenez. With 7 starts in a row he appears to be Fulham’s starter for the foreseeable and with 4 returns in his last 7 he also appears to be showing some solid attacking involvement. Nonetheless, this fixture is mainly about the opposition. A return is very likely given how poor Burnley’s defence has been.

Final Thoughts

We wanted to make sure we targeted the Wolves, West Ham and Burnley fixtures and we feel like we have done that successfully. Also, going into periods where lots of players will be subjected to impromptu rests, it is vitally important to maintain solid bench cover, which between Rodon, Dewsbury-Hall and Konsa we believe we have done.

Captaincy is always going to be tricky but we personally would lean towards Saka over Timber given it’s at the emirates and Wolves are coming off a slightly shorter week following the drumming to Man United. Timber is the safer option but Saka definitely has the higher ceiling.
