Premier League Head-to-Head Record:

Given how long Sunderland have been out of the Premier League, and how short of a period Bournemouth have been a Premier League team, it should come as no shock that these teams have only met 4 times in the league and have not faced each other in league competition since the 2016-17 season. Of the 4 meetings between the two clubs in the Premier League, Bournemouth have won 2, Sunderland have won 1 and they drew the other. Considering these two teams have not met since 2017, both having completely different squads and of course different managers, there is not a lot to take from those games so this first meeting of the 25/26 season is the beginning a new era between these two teams.

Sunderland Team News:

Sunderland will almost certainly name an unchanged starting lineup from their last 2 league games – the draw against Arsenal and last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Fulham. Le Bris has settled in to this 5-4-1 formation with Geertruida having moved into the LCB role. Xhaka, Sadiki, Le Fee and Traore make up the 4 with Le Fee being a hybrid midfielder/forward which allows for it to shift from a 2 man midfield with 2  true wide players to a 3 man midfield where Traore can go join Isidor playing higher.

Habib Diarra (groin) is progressing well in his rehabilitation but his return won’t be rushed, coach Regis Le Bris confirmed in the press conference. “Rehab is going well, but we will be patient. We want him at his best in the second half of the season”. It sounds like Diarra is around a month away from seeing time on the pitch in a competitive game.

Sunderland Players to Watch:

Diarra: Progressing well but still weeks if not months away from game action.

Isidor: Le Bris has settled on him being his starting striker over Mayenda and the other candidates.

Bournemouth Team News:

Speaking in his Friday Press Conference Iraola spoke on Semenyo’s status for the weekend stating “Yeah I hope so. We still have to do training but he has been doing modified training with the team in the previous days so if everything goes well today he’s going to be available”. That is great news for Semenyo FPL owners and Bournemouth alike, baring a setback Semenyo will start.

Speaking on Kluivert’s injury Iraola gave good news revealing “Justin is doing very well, I hope he can even do something today with the group. He had a very small injury in the adductor but he’s doing well”. Kluivert should make the matchday squad and be available to play some part in the game against Sunderland but I would not expect him to be in the starting XI.

“Ryan Christie got injured with the [Scotland] national team, same as Ben [Gannon-Doak], when they played the first game against Greece. He also played in the game against West Ham for us. But we did an MRI after the game because he was not feeling comfortable. He has a sprain in the knee and he will be out for some time”. Not good news on Ryan Christie who I expect will not be seen on the pitch before 2026.

Semenyo took part in training Tuesday, according to James Savundra of Sky Sports. This is a great indication he will return to the starting lineup this week after missing last weekend’s draw with West Ham.

Iraola also informed the media that young winger “Ben Doak also, a hamstring injury, it’s a bad one. He will be out for some time”. Bad hamstring injuries can range between 2-4 months so do not expect to see Doak on the pitch any time soon.

Lewis Cook, as he did for large parts of last season filled in at RB with Smith just recovering from a concussion and with the fact Smith has by no means made that position his own. He will likely start at RB once again.

Diakite started over Milosavljevic in Bournemouth’s last game and should keep his place over the 18 year old.

Bournemouth Players to Watch:

Semenyo: Iraola is expecting Semenyo to be fit and available to start against Sunderland.

Kluivert: Expected back on the grass training on Friday. Likely starts on the bench.

Christie: Expected to miss 3-4 weeks.

Cook: Likely to play at RB as he did for large parts of last season.

Sunderland vs Bournemouth Preview & Predicted Score:

Score Prediction: Everton 2-2 Newcastle
