Our Newcastle vs Wolves predicted lineups with data & tactical insights.
Newcastle had a turbulent summer that has affected the beginning of their season. The Alexander Isak saga dragged on, affected the mood of their pre-season, was something Eddie Howe had to deal with on a daily basis and affected the players they could bring in. Well now the future is certain. Isak made his British transfer record move to Liverpool and Newcastle replaced him with Nick Woltemade and Yoanne Wissa. The international break is a perfect reset, and Newcastle can look at GW4 as the real start to their season. They have started with two drab draws to Aston Villa and Leeds, and a dramatic loss to Liverpool in the last minute of a game that Newcastle fought back from 2-0 down in with 10 men. Howe’s men will be looking to start this next stretch of games with a strong performance and their first win of the season in front of the Geordie faithful.
Wolves lost key players from last season in Cunha, Ait-Nouri and Semedo. Vitor Pereira had a difficult task ahead of him keeping Wolves up this season after they only signed 3 or 4 players of note, none with massive reputations. Things have not started brightly, with 3 straight losses to Manchester City, Bournemouth and Everton to begin the season. One positive is Wolves did manage to keep Strand Larsen from the lurking Newcastle who did make two bids for the Norwegian striker that were rejected, which was pivotal given he is probably Wolves’ best player.
Newcastle have superior talent all over the pitch, and they’re adding two talented strikers in to the mix for this game. They will look to do what they do best, which is impose their physical advantages all over the pitch and assert their dominance. Howe will want to see his team control the game in possession and create chances, press high when they lose it and pen Wolves in until they crack. Wolves will look to defend deep with their back-5 and use Arias and Hwang to hit Newcastle on the counter – but the talent gap and physical advantages Newcastle have will be tough to overcome.
Lineups will be updated throughout the week in live time as and when injury and lineup news is announced.
Green Light: Confident the player will start.
Amber Light: A toss up on whether the player will start.
Red Light: Confident the player will not start.

Howe speaking on Friday revealed that Nick Woltemade is fit and ready to go for Saturday’s game against Wolves, but Wissa will not be due to the injury he suffered playing for the DR Congo during the international break. On Wissa’s injury, Howe explained that “Unfortunately he (Wissa) won’t make this game. I saw him for the first time yesterday and he’s feeling the effects of the injury sustained just before he came off (while on international duty). We’re going to have to see how he is.” It does not sound like Wissa will face a lengthy spell out, and he might even be in contention for GW5.
On Woltemade, Howe stated “He’s fine (for Wolves). He’s trained well and we’re really pleased with how he’s looked in the first couple of days… he’s gone straight into our training and not looked out of place. He’s shown his qualities. We’re really pleased with how he’s settled in” – strong praise and Woltemade will almost certainly start against Wolves.
Eddie Howe revealed that Joelinton is now fit and ready to go for this weekend, stating “Joe has trained. He’s been fit and available, he’s been out on the training pitch and is looking good. Really happy to welcome him back, such an important player.” The Brazilian will start alongside his usual midfield partners. but Jacob Ramsey will be out until after the next international break, with Howe informing us that “Jacob is our only other injury concern and he’ll miss the game. He’s suffered from that tackle against Leeds, his ankle swelled up at half-time and he had to come off. Unfortunately I think he’ll be missing until the next international break so that’s a big blow”. Barnes will now definitely start at left-wing with Ramsey injured and Gordon suspended.
Lewis-Hall should re-take his place in the starting lineup in GW4. He is too good to continue riding the bench for old man Trippier. Sven Botman came off with what many thought was an injury against Leeds, despite Howe claiming this was not necessarily the case. Botman was also pictured in training Thursday which is a big boost for Newcastle’s defence.
Anthony Gordon serves game number 2 of his 3 match suspension for the red card he picked up against Liverpool.

Strand-Larsen did not go away with the Norwegian National Team during the international break as needed to recover a minor achilles injury (if there is such a thing). The injury popped up amidst two bids from Newcastle and reports Larsen wanted the move, so the severity of the injury was dubious. However, Vitor Pereira speaking on Friday informed the media Strand Larsen is out for GW4’s game against Newcastle, saying “We are without [Jorgen Strand] Larsen, the injury was a bit more serious and he’s trying to come back. He is not in a condition for the game. We want him back as soon as possible, but he’s not training yet”. Sounds like he has a shot for GW5.
Hwang, who replaced Strand Larsen in the starting lineup against Everton, scored Wolves’ first goal in that game. Hwang will be the starting striker once until Strand Larsen does return. Arias keeps his place in the starting XI while Strand Larsen is out but he may move to the bench when he returns.
Santiago Bueno came in to the starting lineup for Doherty and played the full 90 mins in GW3. Seems like Doherty has been dropped. Andre vs Bellegarde in midfield is one to watch. Hugo Bueno started at LWB in GW3, however Moller Wolfe, who started the first 2 GWs replaced him in the second half and got an assist for Wolves second goal of the match. Moller Wolfe should move back in to the starting LWB spot.
Andre vs Bellegarde is one to watch. Fer Lopez made an impact off the bench against Everton and is also a factor in midfield but for now, it looks like Andre is Gomes’ partner.

Moller Wolfe:

Andre:

Hwang:

Strand-Larsen:

Newcastle will set up in their usual 4-2-1-3 system, welcoming their starting midfield back as well as new star striker Nick Woltemade into the starting XI. They will look to physically dominate Wolves all over the pitch, and establish control of the game, and territory in Wolves’ half of the pitch as they break Wolves defence down. Wolves will look to be stubborn, defend in a deep compact block and hit Newcastle on the counter, but it is difficult to see a world where the Magpies don’t claim all 3 points.
