Our GW12 Newcastle vs Manchester City predicted lineups, preview, team overviews, H2H record, betting odds and predicted score.
This fixture at St. James’ Park pits two very talented squads against each other but both managers and teams are facing very different types of pressure heading in to this big GW12 clash. Newcastle, almost shockingly, are currently languishing in the bottom half of the table after a subpar start to the season that have thrown out some horrible performances and results from Howe’s men, and their poor form is now exacerbated by a brutal injury list with the likes of Gordon, Wissa, Pope and Livramento all potentially missing out this weekend as well as big Dan Burn’s being suspended for Saturday’s game. The Toon Army face a Manchester City side that have reclaimed their place among England’s elite after Pep’s worst season at the club last season, and now they look to be true title challengers who can push Arsenal all the way. However this City side are certainly not of the level of their previous title winning sides, with a weaker defence, a much lesser version of Rodri attempting to be fit for this game and an attack that almost solely relies on goals from Haaland.
City will of course enter this game the much more confident of the two sides with 4 wins in their last 5 league games and coming off a thrashing of current title holders Liverpool in GW11, which will have Pep and his team thinking this title is their for the taking. While their performances are not as imperious as previous City sides, they are getting results and even the blip against Villa was quickly washed away by beating Liverpool – although it will be a concern that you see a similar performance against a more talented Newcastle team. Newcastle have been absolutely awful in the Premier League, losing 3 of their last 4 league games including losses to lowly West Ham and Brentford. What is confounding is these league results are sandwiched between wins over Benfica and Athletic Club in the Champions League and Spurs in the EFL Cup, so this Newcastle side are not quite dead and buried just yet. With both sides needing a victory for very different reasons; Eddie Howe to restore confidence and Pep Guardiola to keep pace with league leaders Arsenal, this game should have plenty of intrigue and this tie always produces exciting games. Cannot wait for this one!

Despite these contests between these two clubs over recent years, particularly during Howe and Pep’s reigns, having been hard fought, entertaining, close contests that truly could have gone either way, Manchester City do have a dominant record when it comes to the actual results. Across their last 5 league meetings, City have won 4 of those 5 with the other result being last season’s 1-1 draw at St. James Park. This game always produces goals, with only 1 of the last 5 meetings failing to produce at least 2 goals and we have had a 4 goal and 5 goal game within their recent clashes. City’s dominance in this tie stretches back further than just the last 5 meetings with Newcastle’s last victory over City in the league coming in 2019, so given the awful form Newcastle are in right now in the league, it’s going to take a mighty effort from Howe’s men to start a new chapter in this head-to-head.

Howe revealed Friday in his press conference that “Anthony Gordon is very close. He’s worked well during the break and he’s touch and go for the game. We’ll make a very late decision.” Sounds like Gordon is a true game-time decision, and a player that Howe wants to start if he can. If he cannot go, Barnes likely starts at LW with either Murphy or Elanga RW.
Howe also confirmed that “Nick Pope has trained and there’s no problems there” after Pope was in concussion protocol. He will start.
Speaking on the injured Tino Livramento revealing “He’s very close. He’s trained in the international break which is great to see. He’s such an important player for us and it’s great to have him back training with the group. He’s done a lot of work. He’s been very, very good professionally with how he’s dealt with the injury and the work he’s done with the physios so I’d say he’s in good shape”. This sounds extremely positive from Howe and the fact Livramento has been in team training for what seems like most of this week is extremely positive. I expect him to start against Man City this weekend.
Speaking on Yoanne Wissa who has been injured since joining the club, Howe said “He’s working well. He’s not back training with us yet but he’s close… He’s close to training with us but before he gets to there it’s difficult to give you a return date”. Sounds like Wissa is still at least 2 weeks away from being in a matchday squad if not longer given the length of his layoff and lack of pre-season.
Joelinton is no longer an injury concern and will be fit to start this weekend.
Pope: Is fit and will start.
Burn: Suspended one game.
Livramento: On track to return for Man City and should start.
Joelinton: No injury concern.
Gordon: True game-time decision, I lean towards Barns starting with Gordon on the bench.
Wissa: Training on grass – couple weeks away from team training.
Elanga: Out of favour and form.
Hall: Could start at LB with Burn injured and Livramento not certain to be fit enough to start.

Pep Guardiola revealed Friday that Rodri is not yet fit to be a part of the matchday squad. Guardiola stated “Everybody is fit apart from [Mateo] Kovacic and Rodri… Rodri is making good steps, almost three weeks since he had the last little bit of a setback. While he may be close to returning, it seems like Nico Gonzalez will start the next couple of league games for City in his place.
Kovacic is set to undergo heel surgery in the coming days and will be sidelined until February.
Reijnders has not started the last 2 league games. Pep’s preference at this minute is to start Silva alongside a true 6.
Cherki has been excellent of late, creating moments of magic and chances for Haaland and notching 2 assists vs Bournemouth. However his tendency to walk out of possession along with his lack of pace and power might mean he is sacrificed against Newcastle for Savinho or Marmoush. Savinho is the most likely.
Rodri: Will not be fit to start against Newcastle. May be 2/3 weeks away from starting.
Cherki: Has earned his starting spot and has been getting picked consistently by Pep.
Reijnders: Out of favour and has not started City’s last 2 Premier League games.
Newcastle will set up in their normal 4-3-3 shape they always have under Eddie Howe, with that tried and trusted physical, combative but also technically gifted midfield trio at the heart of everything they do, and this is likely the deepest and most talented set of forward options Howe has ever had when coaching against City. Manchester City will also set up in their version of a 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 hybrid they have been fleeting between and with Rodri back in midfield alongside Silva, they should be even more formidable.
Newcastle will likely look to make this as physical and tiring a game as possible for City, with that midfield looking to dictate in and out of possession and not allow City to have sustained possession and periods of dominance in City’s half. City’s high line and high press will also somewhat play into Newcastle’s hands as City will leave space for Newcastle to hit them on the counter which Newcastle are certainly capable of doing, they have been one of the best counter attacking teams in the division under Howe over the years. Where Newcastle’s issues will lie is defending City, whether sitting deep and allowing all the creative brilliance of Cherki, Foden and Doku to fashion half chances for Haaland that he turns in to high quality ones, or in period’s of Newcastle pressing for a goal themselves they allow Haaland space to run in to. St. James Park is also a big factor here, but in the end a Newcastle team in poor form that has just lost 3-1 to both West Ham and Brentford are very likely not going to be able to contain or beat a Man City side that is confident and in great form. This looks to be another hard-fought, entertaining game that City squeak out over the Geordie’s.
