Our GW6 Newcastle vs Arsenal predicted lineups, preview, team overviews, H2H record, betting odds and predicted score!
Newcastle have arguably been Arsenal’s bogey team over the past couple of seasons. The Magpies got the better of the Gunners three times last season, twice in the EFL Cup on the way to their first trophy in 70 years, and once in the league; with Arsenal securing a 1-0 win at the Emirates in other league game. This is a game between two of the most industrious, physical, athletic teams in the league. Newcastle have had a somewhat disappointing start to the season, with 1 win, 3 draws and a loss to Liverpool, however they are undefeated in their last 3 games with 3 clean sheets and are looking to truly kick start their season with a win over a team they have confidence in going up against. Arsenal have also had a disappointing beginning to a season in which they must win the league with 3 wins against lesser teams, a loss to title rivals Liverpool and a draw against Manchester City last weekend in a game where they trailed for the majority. This one will be a real battle, old school Barclays at times, and both teams will be desperate for a win to keep the hopes they had at the beginning of this season truly alive – can’t wait for this one!

Schar missed last weekend’s draw against Bournemouth due to the head injury and likely concussion he picked up against Barcelona in the Champions League last Thursday. He could potentially miss Sunday’s game also.
Speaking about Yoanne Wissa to the media on Friday, Eddie Howe informed us that “Of course everyone wanted Yoane to be fit. There’s nothing personally I would have done different – we did everything we did as a football club to try and look after Yoane. But it’s like with any footballer – when they go away on international duty, you’re not in control of the minutes they play, and unfortunately he got injured… We think he’ll be out until the next international break. He’s got a race on to be fit for that Brighton game. Hopefully he can make it, and then of course he’ll be such an important player for us”.
Not good news on new signing Wissa, who we probably don’t need to think about from an FPL perspective until after the next international break. What that does mean is Woltemade should start every league game between now and the international break.
Woltemade started against Bournemouth and will start once again. Guimaraes and Joelinton did not in GW5 against Bournemouth due to rotation / rest needs but will surely start against Arsenal. Miley, Willock and possibly another youngster will start against Bradford in midweek.
Lewis-Hall started his first league game of the season against Bournemouth, as Trippier had played the previous 2 games last week and was not going to play 3 games in 7 days. Hall could and probably should keep his spot, but Howe likes to play favourites and Trippier is certainly one of those. Newcastle’s starting lineup for Bradford on Wednesday should tell us who will start in the league on Sunday.
Sven Botman started in Schar’s place and should do again if Schar isn’t cleared to play. Anthony Gordon returns from his 3 match suspension and will start against Arsenal on Sunday. He started against Barcelona last Thursday so he should be fit and ready to go.
Lewis-Hall: Will start. Trippier won’t start 3 games in 7 days.
Murphy: Elanga started against Barcelona, which would mean Murphy likely starts on Sunday just based off rotation, but Murphy also delivered the assist for Gordon’s goal against Barcelona. He will definitely start.
Barnes: 1 more game of Gordon’s suspension to be served so Barnes will start.
Trippier: Will be on the bench.
Elanga: Started against Barca and had a decent game but Murphy made more impact in 25 minutes than Elanga did in 65.
Ramsey: Out until after next international break (ankle).
Wissa: Out until after the next international break.
Gordon: Serving final game of suspension.
Saliba returned to the matchday squad against Bilbao last Tuesday but was an unused substitute, and subsequently started against Manchester City on Sunday and had a tough time against Haaland. He likely won’t feature at all in Arsenal’s EFL Cup game against Port Vale on Wednesday and then will be ready to start against Newcastle on Sunday.
Noni Madueke has reportedly picked up a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for a short while. There were reports on X that he had torn his ACL but those were unfounded, and it is a less serious injury.
Saka returned off the bench as a half-time substitute against Manchester City last Sunday. He made it through the game without any trouble, and will start against Newcastle given he is the team’s best player as well as the fact Madueke is now injured.
Eze did not start the last game but showed his effect and his skills immediately, with Arsenal putting the pressure on City as soon as he and Saka came on. Arsenal had City on the ropes for the first 20 minutes of the second half. Then Eze made the game defining pass, that possibly only he and Zubimendi in this Arsenal squad can play, for Martinelli’s equaliser.
Eze could start on the left-wing so that Arteta can persist with the very defensive minded midfield 3 of Rice, Zubimendi and Merino. Or Martinelli in his form starts on the left, and Eze plays in some kind of central 10 role ahead of Rice and Zubimendi. It seems unlikely Arteta will opt for that risk against this Newcastle team he struggled against last season though.
We have heard little news about Havertz potential return date. Hincapie also has reportedly picked up a knock that kept him out of the Man City game. We await further information on that injury.
Saliba: Returned against City, will start against Newcastle.
Saka: Came off the bench at half-time against Man City. Will start against Newcastle.
Madueke: Out with knee injury.
Odegaard: Suffered a re-injury to his shoulder that he injured against Leeds. Could miss a couple more weeks.
Eze: Will start at either left-wing or as the 10 with Odegaard injured. Set up Martinelli’s goal – has to start.
White: Back in the squad against Man City, could be fit enough to start on Sunday but I think Timber will start with Gordon back.
Hincapie: Picked up a knock of some kind. Was not in the squad against City. Could miss out on Sunday.
Havertz: Still no timeline on return.
