Our GW12 Liverpool vs Nottingham Forest predicted lineups, preview, team overviews, H2H record, betting odds and predicted score.
This fixture was arguably Liverpool’s most difficult across the 38 played last season on their way to lifting the Premier League title. Slot’s team’s only loss at Anfield last season in the league was to this Forest team, and the only team along with Arsenal that his side failed to beat in either league game. These two teams meet in remarkably different circumstances this season with Liverpool struggling mightily this season after a large overhaul of the squad that was focused on the future of the club, with the Reds having lost 4 of their last 5 in the league. Nottingham Forest were such a stable side with a clear identity this time last season, but now they have had 2 managers sacked this season and Sean Dyche is now the man in charge of this team and so last years results between these two clubs can almost be thrown out and ignored.
Liverpool had managed to steady the ship a little with a win over Aston Villa in the league sandwiched between wins over Frankfurt and Real Madrid in the Champions League, but then were outclassed by Manchester City last weekend. Hopes of a title repeat may be all but over, but Slot and Liverpool’s star players will be determined to show City was a blip on the road to recovery and a win at home over a struggling Forest team would help to make that a reality. If they can make it 2 wins out of 3 in the Premier League, and vault themselves back up in to the top 4, the Reds can begin to build confidence and an identity again, and with the overwhelming talent in the squad can maybe look to show title winning form in the second half of the season. Nottingham Forest steadied their own ship last weekend with a huge win over Leeds following a 2-2 draw against Manchester United, which has propelled them to within touching distance of other relegation candidates point tallies through 11 Gameweeks. The Dyche era will look to hit full throttle by taking something from Anfield and really providing the spark and hope within the fanbase that htis Forest team can claw it back and stay up this season. Which desperate team will get the win? We will find out this Saturday!

Liverpool’s only league defeat at Anfield last season was to Nottingham Forest, 1 of only 4 losses on their way to the league title (2 came after they secured the title). Arne Slot has yet to beat this Nottingham Forest team although both of last season’s games were with Nuno as Forest manager, and we have now had Ange be hired and sacked and Dyche being brought in since last season so those games may not be very predictive. Overall, in their last 5 league meetings Liverpool have won 3, all under Klopp, and then last season’s 1-1 draw and Forest’s 1-0 win at Anfield round out the last 5 meetings.

Speaking on Friday morning, Arne Slot had plenty of injury news and updates. Starting with the Scotland captain, Slot said “Andy Robertson didn’t train yet but he will be with us today”, which is a good sign for his availability and he will almost certainly start given his form vs Kerkez’s. He offers something Liverpool need at the minute, which is ball progression from defence, a calm head, experience and he makes Van Dijk’s life easier.
Slot confirmed Alisson Becker will return this weekend and start as long as there are no setbacks during Friday training. Slot stated “Alisson trained last week and this week so he will be able to play tomorrow if things work out well today. If he’s ready to play, he will start”.
The big issues Slot revealed on Friday morning were two unexpected muscle injuries for Conner Bradley and Florian Wirtz. Slot informed the media that “we do have some issues after the international break, unfortunately. Conor Bradley is not able to play and Florian Wirtz is not able to play. That’s far from ideal.
No news on Isak is likely a good thing and just means he is fit and healthy. Isak did make the bench for the loss to Manchester City but was an unused substitute. I do not think he will start as Liverpool are looking to find balance and consistency and chemistry. Ekitike has played so well and Gakpo will likely start LW. Isak will of course get around 30 minutes off the bench to built his own rhythm and chemistry with teammates.
Mac Allister has played slightly better of late, particularly against Villa and Madrid but then was again poor against Man City and showed his physical and out of possession limitations. He will have to start due to Wirtz and Bradley injuries that force other midfielders in to different positions.
Speaking on Jeremie Frimpong’s expected return date Slot revealed “But I don’t expect Jeremie to be fully fit for Forest”. His return is expected soon but next weekend will be too early.
Alisson: Will start baring Friday setback.
Bradley: Set to miss the next 3-4 weeks with muscle injury.
Robertson: Liverpool’s starting LB once again and set to train Friday and will be fit to start.
Jones: Will start, just depends on at RB or CM.
Wirtz: Set to miss this week with muscle injury but could return next week.
Gakpo: Will start LW.
Isak: Will be fit to start but likely will make a cameo off the bench.

Sean Dyche had a lot of injury updates in his Friday press conference. On forwards Callum Hudsion-Odoi and Chris Wood he revealed”Callum Hudson-Odoi has made good progress. He’s been on the grass with us this week, he’s certainly in consideration to be in the squad, so that’s better news… Chris Wood’s getting rescanned, so we’re checking up on that but it’s good news so far, that’s just part of the process. There’s nothing untoward about that; it’s just a check-up”. Parsing Dyche’s words on these two key forwards, it sounds like Hudson-Odoi is potentially the less match fit of the two and will start this game on the bench, whereas Wood is truly in contention to start.
Dyche also revealed that “Douglas Luiz is making progress, but it’s going to be a matter of time; it’s not going to be instant”, meaning Luiz is likely weeks away still.
“Dilane Bakwa’s making good progress, he’s on the grass but not with us, he’s just with the medical side and the sports science side. Ola Aina is very similar. [Oleksandr] Zinchenko is making progress, yet again, with the sports science team and the physios, not with us”, so Aina and Zinchenko are set for multiple weeks if not over a month more on the sidelines.
4-2-3-1 is the system that got the most out of this team under Nuno Espirito Santo and it allows their best front-4 to play their natural positions while having a combative, energetic and physical midfield duo that protect the defence and progress the ball into space for the forwards. Dyche’s style of football also suits the centre-back pairing of Murillo and Milenkovic much more than Ange ball.
Wood: Will be fit to start vs Liverpool.
Hudson-Odoi: Will also be fit but possibly only to make the bench, not to start.
Luiz: Making progress but likely still weeks away from being match fit. Sangare will continue to start in his place.
Zinchenko: Weeks away from returning.
Liverpool will set up in their normal 4-2-3-1 shape they always have under Slot, having Wirtz as almost a 4th midfield skillset combined with a forwards skillset out on the LW and the added creativity and vision from that slot could help unlock this Forest defence Liverpool found so hard to unpick last season. Forest will also set up in their version of a 4-2-3-1 that this squad of players had so much success with last season under Nuno and have the exact profiles you would want in their version of the system – this is by far the most talented squad Dyche has coached.
While Liverpool lost their last league game and Forest won theirs, and so there is an argument Forest come in the more confident side, the international break likely provided a good reset for Slot and Liverpool who had regained some form and confidence recently. Some issues were solved, but as the Man City game showed not all were solved. Despite that, this Liverpool team has built a bit more of a solid foundation with recent performances against Villa, Frankfurt and Real Madrid, with Slot likely making more tweaks after analysing the loss to City, and with Alisson returning and playing in front of the Anfield crowd, Liverpool will likely too much and are too talented for Dyche’s Forest to get anything from the game. Dyche will set his team up similarly to how Nuno set his up when he walked away with a 0-1 win over the Reds last season, and that was a better Liverpool team at least when indexing for form and confidence, but defend compactly and resolutely and be deadly on the counter sounds a lot easier than it is in practice, and I see Liverpool being able to break this Forest defence down a couple of times while keeping it tight at the back. 2-0 Liverpool or maybe a 2-1 feels like the right call for this 3pm kick-off.
