Neither Gravenberch nor Isak were able to make the matchday squad for the loss at Brentford last weekend. Slot also informed the media last Friday that “Alexander (Isak) is not too bad. He is a question mark for the weekend so we will see where he is and that is the same with Ryan Gravenberch”. Both should be in contention to be fit for Aston Villa this weekend given they were close and not serious injuries. Training reports and Slot’s press conference before Liverpool’s EFL Cup game vs Crystal Palace on Wednesday will reveal more.
Curtis Jones was forced off with an injury during the loss to Aston Villa and will need to be assessed. Slot revealed “We have to wait and see. He asked to be taken off but he walked off instead of needing a lot of treatment, so I have to wait and see. There are a lot of games, in three or four days there is another one”. Somewhat positive but this injury could keep Jones out for this game. We will again know more after Liverpool’s game against Crystal Palace.
Arne Slot speaking to the media on Friday revealed that “Jeremie Frimpong is not in a good place, he won’t play today, tomorrow or next week. Hamstring injuries take a while”. That was to be expected and Frimpong was not a major factor in starting games at the moment as Liverpool find the right balance in their starting lineup to get the best out of their star players.
Gravenberch is a huge miss for Liverpool, but after the performances of Jones, Szoboszlai and Wirtz midweek Slot will feel confident he can form a midfield trio that can run this game for his team and protect his defence enough.
Lastly Slot revealed “Alisson Becker is also not in the squad”, so Mamardashvili starts at least 1 more league game.
Speaking on Salah’s form, Slot said “Players miss chances and he is a human being. We are not used to him missing chances… The main thing is that he always has scored goals for Liverpool. The last thing I worry about is Mo scoring goals again. He’s done that his entire life and I expect him to do that again in the coming weeks and months”. Slot seems very far away from having given up on Salah or wanting to drop him. He will start against Brentford.
Liverpool were much better against Frankfurt in and out of possession. Getting Robertson into the team for Kerkez meant Liverpool had a better passer who can progress the ball from more angles in their backline, which was big. It was displayed perfectly in Liverpool’s first goal with a beautiful assist from Robertson from inside his own half!
Szoboszlai and Jones were excellent in midfield and started again in midfield. Gravenberch likely returning complicates things.
Mac Allister will have to be dropped and Gravenberch may not be fit. If Gravenberch is fit, he would likely start and then one of Szoboszlai or Jones may shift to right-back to allow Wirtz to stay in the team and in his best position. Wirtz was excellent against Frankfurt and notched 2 assists.
Ekitike, Gakpo and Isak worked much better than Isak, Salah and Gakpo had been working as a trio due to the vast gap between Ekitike and Salah in their ability out of possession and the form Ekitike is in in front of goal.
After 4 straight losses in the league changes need to be made from Slot to his starting lineup. Mac Allister can’t start at the moment along with having Isak and Salah in the team for out of possession reasons. Kerkez may also have to give way for Robertson.
Gravenberch: Should return this week.
Isak: Should return this week.
Alisson: Still out.
Frimpong: Facing an extended period out with a hamstring injury.
Mac Allister: Too out of form and fitness to start. Starting him with Salah and Isak causing too many out of possession struggles.
Jones: Picked up a knock against Brentford that could keep him out. Not serious.
Wirtz: Has to start. Liverpool immediately improved when he came on against Chelsea and Manchester United. Got 2 assists vs Frankfurt.
Ekitike: Been playing too well not to start either LW or striker. Scored midweek.

Buendia (ankle) was spotted walking on crutches after Sunday’s 1-0 victory against Manchester City and is expected to miss time, according to Raheil M from VillaFanTV.
Watkins is now fit and started against Manchester City in the 1-0 win. Guessand was substituted on for Buendia not Malen so it would stand to reason Guessand will start.
Harvey Elliott is loan locked.
Mings suffered an ankle injury that has kept him out of the past 2 games. He could return to training this week but I would expect Torres to continue starting.
According to the Athletic on October 8th, Tielemans is set to miss 3 more weeks out injured.
Onana and Kamara should be the double pivot pairing while Tielemans is out. They should start together again.
Buendia: Ankle injury likely to keep him out for a stretch.
Mings: Could return this weekend but Torres should start.
Elliott: Loan locked.
Guessand: Likely starts over Malen in Buendia’s place.
Tielemans: Out 3 more weeks.
