Big Man Bakar brings you his take on if you should use your Bench Boost chip in Gameweek 7 or not!
Few FPL chips divide opinion quite like Bench Boost. Every season, managers wrestle with the timing of when to unleash it, and with new chips introduced this year, the debate feels more intense than ever. The extra flexibility has tempted some to use it early, while others prefer to wait patiently for the “perfect” Gameweek. The reality is that timing could be the difference between a season-defining haul and a disappointing waste.
Bench Boosting is usually about fixtures for your cheaper assets, and this week looks challenging on paper. Leeds face Spurs, Burnley take on Aston Villa, and Sunderland go up against Manchester United. All three promoted clubs are in tough matchups.
History also tells us that Double Gameweeks have generally produced the most profitable Bench Boost scores. When budget players play twice, even modest hauls can add up to season-changing totals. There is also the slight possibility of a Double Gameweek in GW16, which could be more rewarding.
A new wrinkle this season is the AFCON rule change, which grants managers five free transfers during that period. That flexibility makes it easier to restructure your squad later and could allow for a stronger Bench Boost setup without taking unnecessary hits.
For many Gameweek 6 Wildcarders, however, Gameweek 7 is an appealing time to deploy it. With 15 fully fit players, minimal rotation risk compared to post-international breaks, and no need to waste future transfers on bench planning, the setup is almost ideal.
Using the chip now allows managers to spend less on bench players moving forward and concentrate transfers on improving their starting XI. Expectations from the bench may be modest, but with defensive contributions boosting budget picks, the potential for steady points has increased.
It’s also worth noting that the promoted sides’ fixtures may not be as daunting as they look. Spurs travel after a Champions League tie, United remain inconsistent, and Villa have been unpredictable. If you don’t own players with poor minutes, like Marc Guiu, your squad depth might already be primed.
Another benefit is that once the Bench Boost is out of the way, you can focus on chips like Triple Captain or Free Hit without juggling long-term clashes in strategy.
If activating Bench Boost in GW7 requires major surgery, it is wiser to wait. But if your squad is already healthy, with 15 reliable players, this week offers one of the better low-risk windows to finally cash in.
