Very surprisingly Everton have the better record in this head-to-head over recent years. Given Everton have been battling relegation while Newcastle have been making the Champions League and having successful seasons ending in silverware, this is surprising. Everton have won 2 of the last 5 meetings, with Newcastle winning 1 and then the others being stalemate’s. This is not a game that has produced a lot of goals in the last 3 meetings in particular, with their being 3 goals total in the last 3 league meetings.

Speaking on Friday Moyes informed the media that “Yes, we are [light in midfield]. Merlin [Rohl] having an operation has made us light, so we are quite short but we have other people who can play in there – Charly Alcaraz, Dwight McNeil if we need to as well. I think those players can do the job in there, if required”. While he is speaking on midfield depth, Garner and Irroegbunam fill the 2 deeper roles and O’Brien likely plays at RB. This will be more a depth/substitution discussion.
Speaking on the injured Seamus Coleman Moyes stated “Seamus [Coleman] has got a small injury. We don’t think it’s too bad but he just felt his hamstring early in the game [at Man Utd], which was really disappointing from his point of view and ours”, so it is a positive that Moyes does not believe the hamstring injury is ‘too bad’ however at his age, a soft tissue injury like a hamstring strain even will keep Coleman sidelined for weeks. I would not expect to see him back until late December at earliest.
Moyes provided a vague update on Branthwaite and Patterson revealing “Jarrad [Branthwaite] is still on the way back and [Nathan Patterson] as well”. Not much to take from that.
Idrissa Gueye was controversially and incredibly sent off Monday after being shown a straight red card for slapping teammate Michael Keane. It was a bizarre incident and even more confounding the referee felt it was worthy of a red, and now Gueye will miss the next 3 games. Garner and Irroegbunam will start in midfield with O’Brien likely having to come in to play RB with Coleman injured.
The only major news Moyes had during his Friday press conference last week was that “Unfortunately, Merlin had an operation a week last Monday on his hernia. It’s going to keep him out for a few weeks. Hopefully by the time we get around to December, he’ll be fit and ready to go again”. Not great news on new signing Rohl but he is not a major factor in starting lineups anyway.
Barry has started the last 3 league games, and Everton have taken 7 points from those games, whereas the previous 2 games Beto started and Everton lost both. Barry is Everton’s starting striker until further notice.
Patterson is suffering from a hernia and had to undergo a procedure on his groin. Moyes revealed “(Patterson) has had a small procedure on his groin so he’s obviously not available for this game”. He will likely be out a few more weeks.
Gueye: Suspended 3 games for slapping his own teammate.
Coleman: Suffered a hamstring injury that will sideline him at least 3 weeks.
Garner: Will play in midfield after Gueye’s suspension
Irroegbunam: Will start with Gueye suspended.
Barry: Started the last 3 PL games, and Everton’s form and the results improved. Will start once again.
O’Brien: Will start at RB.
Rohl: Out until December.

Speaking in his Friday media availability Howe revealed “Nothing major from the game [against Marseille]. We will have a good look at the guys today. Sven Botman has been nursing a back problem in the last few days”. Botman will not start against Everton with Burn returning from suspension as well as Schar and Thiaw being available and in good form.
Howe also revealed bad news about Trippier, stating “[Kieran Trippier] had a scan on his hamstring, I think it’s roughly around a month – give or take. That’s the diagnosis. Fingers crossed we can get him back quickly”. Livramento and Hall will be the starting fullbacks until he returns and maybe even after Trippier returns.
“He is doing well, he trained with us for the first time on Wednesday so I was really pleased with how he looked. That’s his first time competitively with the group. Let’s see how he responds today… We’ve got [a potential return date] in mind, but it’s probably best if I keep that to myself. We don’t want to disappoint anyone. Of course, we want to involve him as soon as possible”. Wissa being in team training is a big step in his recovery and means he should be part of matchday squads in the next 2-3 weeks but as Howe said they are not rushing him.
Speaking on whether he would stick with Pope as his no1 goalkeeper Howe said “All options are on the table for me. I need to think long and hard with the team selection about who I pick. I’ll try and do that on merit. I get the luxury of seeing the players train every day, goalkeepers included… Nick’s a top-class professional and he’s an outstanding goalkeeper. We certainly back him, he’s made a number of brilliant saves for us this season already”. Sounds like Howe believes in and will stick with Pope for now.
Gordon started against Marseille in the loss and will be in Howe’s thought’s as his preferred LW but Barnes goal scoring form at the minute makes it hard to drop him. Barnes likely starts at LW against Everton.
Livramento has started the last 2 games for Newcastle – Man City and Marseille. He will start once again with Trippier likely out.
Burn: Returns from one game suspension.
Trippier: Did not make the squad for Marseille with undisclosed injury and unlikely to be fit for Everton.
Livramento: Will start at RB with Trippier injured.
Hall: Will start with Trippier out.
Gordon: Made his return against Marseille but wont oust Barnes from LW spot while he is in great goal scoring form.
Wissa: Training on grass – couple weeks away from team training.
Elanga: Out of favour and form.
