Everton vs Crystal Palace Predicted Lineups, Preview, Odds & Prediction

This is a meeting between two of the most pleasant surprises of the season so far. Both teams have had excellent starts to the season and look to be teams on the rise compared to last season. Crystal Palace ended Liverpool’s 100% record last weekend to remain undefeated in all competitions in their last 18 games. They now currently sit 3rd in the league, are the only undefeated team and Glasner and the fans alike will be dreaming of securing European football next season. Their record through 6 games is 3 draws and 3 wins, and will look to remain undefeated against an Everton team that have also had a dream start to their season. Everton have been in relegation dog fights the last few seasons, but do not look like they will get dragged into one this season. Grealish and moving to a brand new state of the art stadium has seemingly breathed new life into this Everton team, and they are playing a more attacking and enjoyable brand of football this season. Through 6 games the Toffees have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 2, but have only lost 1 of their last 5 and that was to Liverpool at Anfield. They are currently 9th, tied on points with 8th placed Chelsea and will be looking to show that they are as serious a candidate as Palace are to finish in the European places by ending Palace’s undefeated streak and climbing the table further. Palace will of course be looking to keep that streak going and to put more distance between themselves and the chasing mid table pack, cementing themselves as one of the best teams in the league this season.

Match Details:

Fixture: Everton vs Crystal Palace

Stadium: Hill Dickinson Stadium

Date: Sunday 5th October

Kick-off: 2:00pm BST

Premier League Head-to-Head Record:

The head-to-head between these two teams has been surprisingly one sided over recent years, with Everton dominating despite finishing below Palace for the last 3 seasons and having been embroiled in relegation fights will Palace never really were. Of the last 5 league meetings, Everton have won 3 and there have been 2 draws, Palace have not won a league game against Everton since December 2021 and will be looking to change that this weekend. Both teams to score looks a great bet given both teams have scored in each of the last 4 games between these two.

Everton Overview and Form:

Everton have had a good start to their season although their form has tailed off the last few weeks. Coming in to the season, after 3 disappointing bottom half finishes in a row and a couple of those being fights to stay up, the expectations for Moyes and his team were not great. However, the signing of Jack Grealish and Kieran Dewsbury-Hall have injected a level of quality on the ball and confidence in to this team that they lacked. The move to the new Hill Dickinson stadium, where Everton are undefeated this season, has also given this Everton side a needed boost. The Toffees sit 9th in the league, with 2 wins over Wolves and Brighton, 2 losses to Liverpool and Leeds and draws against Aston Villa and West Ham; they are only 3 points behind 4th after 6th games which is more than most Everton fans would have hoped for in pre-season.

Everton are a much much improved team from an attacking outlook this season. Grealish and Dewbury-Hall have brought ball carrying and progressive passing and technical ability to a team that lacked all 3, and that has made Everton a much scarier proposition in possession and going forward. Grealish and Ndiaye on the wings is a real handfull for teams. Everton have some attacking depth now too with Barry, Alcaraz and McNeil all bench players currently who likely would have started in the previous 3 seasons. The Toffees have only scored 7 goals in 6 games which doesn’t seem like a major improvement but in the 2 recent draws against Villa and West Ham they took a total of 32 shots and created enough to score more than 1 goal in those 180 minutes. They sit 9th in the league in xG so their actual goal output should improve as the season goes on.

Defensively Everton have always been fairly solid under Moyes and that has continued in to this season. Their defensive personnel is nothing to write home about, particularly with Branthwaite out injured, but they defend well as a unit, the forwards work very hard as do the midfield and they are tough to break down. Everton have conceded 6 goals in 6 games which is good going, and if they can improve that bit further with Branthwaite returning soon, their defence will provide the foundation for a successful season – certainly their best in years.

This is a matchup Moyes has actually dominated Glasner in, with Everton winning both games home and away last season, despite Palace having the much better season overall. That will give Moyes the confidence to know the way he sets up against Glasner works, and the players will know that too, but now they have Grealish to add to the mix. Everton will look to control as much of the ball as they can, and look to pen Palace back, make them sit deeper and then be sharp in cutting out transition opportunities for this dangerous Palace team that is happy to play without the ball. When Palace control spells of the game, Everton will be fine to defend deep and compactly and look to use those moments to spring Grealish, Ndiaye and Alcaraz for transition opportunities of their own.

Crystal Palace Overview and Form:

Crystal Palace are the form team in the Premier League and that stretches back in to last season. They are undefeated in their last 18 games in all competitions and knocked off champions Liverpool last weekend – ending their 100% start to the season. Palace have gone on from strength to strength under Glasner, after winning the FA Cup, then the Community Shield, and now have started this new season out looking like they will absolutely be in the mix for European football next season. They are 3rd in the league right now with 3 wins and 3 draws from their opening 6 games, having played Liverpool and Chelsea already. A tremendous start that Glasner and Palace will look to continue heading in to this game.

Defensively Palace have been elite at the back. The back-5 of Munoz, Richards, Lacroix, Guehi and Mitchell has everything you’d want a back 5 to have, pace, ball carrying and excellent delivery from the wing-backs and they are top defensively in 1 on 1’s, and the centre-back trio are dominant aerially, handle ground duels and transition situations very well and are all comfortable with the ball at their feet to varying degrees. They have only conceded 3 goals this season which is tied with Arsenal for the best mark in the league through 6 games, and the xG conceded reinforces that has been no fluke, they have conceded the 4th least xG this season. It will be a tough task for Everton to break them down.

Going forward Palace have handled the loss of Eze and Sarr missing time better than anyone could have imagined. They may have only scored 8 in 6 but bigger and better goal scoring days are coming based on the underlying metrics. They are 3rd in the entire league for xG this season as a team, and have created 21 big chances which is 1st in the Premier League. Given Sarr missed 2 games, Wharton has also missed time and Eze left, that is incredible work from Glasner and the rest of the players. Yeremy Pino has also been a good addition that looks to have bedded in quickly and made the loss of Eze less impactful on the pitch.

Palace are flying and will be mightily confident they can go to the Hill Dickinson stadium and leave with all 3 points. They have been dominant defensively and offensively this season. They have been a team that plays without the ball for a lot of games, especially away from home, and they will likely do that again this weekend. They will press high to create opportunities for themselves, but when the press is bypassed they’ll defend in a mid to low block and defend compactly and attempt to win duels, pounce on second balls and start counter attacks for Sarr, Pino, Munoz and Mateta. If Palace can get the first goal in this one, it will be very difficult for Everton to get anything from the game.

Everton Team News:

Moyes had few updates in his Friday press conference. He did however have updates on Branthwaite and new signing Merlin Rohl, stating “Both the same – no change, neither of them fit for the game but they’re both making progress and, with a little bit of luck, we’ll start to get them on the grass. We’ve not got them on the grass yet in training, so that’s where we’re at”. Branthwaite clearly still weeks away but the international break likely comes at a good time, meaning he might only miss 2/3 more actual league games.

Dewsbury-Hall is suspended for this game against Crystal Palace as he has accumulated 5 yellow cards already this season. He will be available again in GW8. Alcaraz will replace him in the starting lineup.

Ndiaye and Grealish will start on the wings and have made Everton a scarier attacking team this season. They are locked in starters every week. I don’t think Grealish will shift centrally with Alcaraz playing wide, Alcaraz will be a straight swap for Dewsbury-Hall.

Beto seems to be winning the battle over Barry to remain Moyes’ preferred starting striker.

Everton Players to Watch:

Branthwaite: Not yet returned to team training.

Dewsbury-Hall: Suspended for 1 match due to yellow card accumulation.

Alcaraz: Will replace Dewsbury-Hall in the starting lineup.

Crystal Palace Team News:

Mateta coming off at half-time of Palace’s Conference League victory Thursday night was planned and not injury related.

Sarr returned from his injury against Liverpool, started and scored the opener in their win over the Champions. He had no setbacks and will start against Everton.

Nketiah also returned from his injury and scored the winning goal off the bench. He won’t start; no one is replacing Mateta in the starting lineup but it is a positive for Palace to have their backup striker back in the fold.

Glasner revealed last Friday that “Yeremy Pino just had to rest on Tuesday. He had a bone bruise – he took a knock, knee on knee, which was very painful – but since Wednesday he’s been training and did the rest of the week. He feels fine, so he’s also available”. Pino made it through the game just fine and is the starting left sided 10.

Same back-5 as always for Palace. They have kept 3 clean sheets through 5 league games this season and Guehi, Munoz and Mitchell have been contributing from an attacking sense this season also.

Kamada seems to be Glasner’s preferred partner for Wharton in midfield.

Crystal Palace Players to Watch:

Mateta: Half time sub on Thursday in the Conference League game was planned. Not injury related.

Sarr: Returned and started against Liverpool. Had no setbacks and will start.

Kamada: Wharton’s partner in midfield.

Nketiah: Returned against Liverpool and scored the winner. Firmly the backup to Mateta.

Everton vs Crystal Palace Preview & Predicted Score:

Everton will set up in the 4-2-3-1 Moyes has employed since he became Manager (again). Palace will set up using their 3-4-2-1 that they always have under Glasner.

Everton are a much better in possession team now than they were previously, and this team will look to have longer spells playing with the ball, establishing some control and attempting to pen Palace back in, create chances and get the first goal while limiting transition opportunities for Palace who are deadly on the counter. They will also be happy to defend deeper at times and look to spring counters themselves with the likes of Ndiaye and Grealish. Both teams have similar strengths.

Palace will probably be a little more happy and comfortable to play without the ball as they are away from home and have also played that style all season. They create so many great counter attacking chances by being this dogged, physical team that’s happy to concede you having harmless possession but as soon as you enter their half they are looking to win the ball back and go. They are so committed to their out of possession structure because it provides them the best platform to attack effectively. They will think if they can get the first goal in this one, and force Everton to take more risks, they can put this one to bed before the 70th with how strong their defence has been.

Given Everton are at home, won both games against Glasner’s Palace last season and are also a much improved side themselves, I don’t see them losing this game. While Palace are on an incredible run, they are obviously not infallible and the early season pace they have set won’t continue forever. Both teams play a somewhat similar style and have similar strengths and Everton won’t allow Palace to physically dominate them and run them ragged at home and should be able to cause some issues of their own. I can see a 1-1 draw here.

Score Prediction: Everton 1-1 Crystal Palace
