Brighton vs Brentford Predicted Lineups, Odds, Preview & Prediction

The “analytics nerds Derby” should be a fun one this Saturday, with these two ‘money-ball’ oriented clubs facing off during the 3pm slate of games. Both sides are locked on 16 points in the condenses middle pack of teams in the table with Brighton potentially a little disappointed with their season so far, whereas Brentford will be absolutely thrilled given their outlook in pre-season and the difficult summer they went through. As well as the battle to climb the league table and enter the fray for the European places, this game is about bragging rights for the crown of England’s best analytical club (there’s no trophy for this) – call it the “Bloom vs Benham” rivarly and you can bet these proud owners will care just as much as the fans and players.

Brighton come in to this game in pretty good form, having lost just one of their last five in the league games, with 2 wins and 2 draws to round out their last 5 so there is still an issue with consistency which has always hampered talented Brighton teams. Entering this game coming off the back of goalless draw in the big Derby against Palace in GW11, playing at home against a team everyone would have said Brighton should be much better than coming in to this season, Saturday’s game present’s a perfect opportunity to really kick-start Brighton’s season into high gear. Brentford have had a generally excellent start to a season in which relegation was a legitimate possibility, and their confidence is sky high after convincingly beating Newcastle 3-1 prior to the international break. This Brentford team are compared to Hurzeler’s side is a lot more direct and willing to surrender possession to defend in numbers and hit teams on the counter with the likes of Schade, Ouattara and Thiago, which is the opposite of a control-oriented Brighton side. This should be a great game, one that I would expect there to be goals and to be in the balance until the very end!

Premier League Head-to-Head Record:

The head-to-head over between these two relatively new mainstays in the Premier League has been a very equal battle that has no winner over their last 5 meetings. Brighton have won 1 of the last 5 at home and the same goes for Brentford and then of course there have been 3 draws, so these two teams have been very difficult to separate and their games hard to call. How these games play out is also difficult to call, with two 6 goal thrillers in their last 5 meetings that also somehow sandwich two 0-0 drab draws, and then Brighton’s 2-1 win rounds out the last 5 meetings. The away team has not won a meeting between these two since 2021 so Brentford have a difficult task. Whatever may be hard to call, what is not a tough call based on their history is suggesting this weekend’s game will be a close fought one that will have both fan bases on the edge of their seats until the dying embers of the game.

Brighton Predicted Lineup vs Brentford GW12

GK - Verbruggen
RB - Wieffer
CB - Van Hecke
CB - Dunk
LB - Kadioglu
CM - Baleba
CM - Ayari
AM - Rutter
RW - Minteh
LW - Mitoma
ST - Welbeck

Brighton Team News:

Speaking on Friday Hurzeler gave a cautiously positive update on Mitoma revealed “It’s not an easy thing to predict. In the last international break I said it’s just a question of two or three weeks. But now he’s getting close. He has to handle the pain, so it’s not a big issue, everything is healed, so he should be fine. We just have to see how he can handle the pain”, so while this is not a definitive he is fit to play, it does seem like if he is pain free Mitoma will be fit to start.

Brighton’s starting XI mostly picks itself at this point with some minor exceptions. Kadioglu seems to have taken the LB role from De Cuyper, and at this minute I do not see that changing. Wieffer is the right-back with Van Hecke and Dunk at centre-back. Ayari is Baleba’s partner in a midfield double pivot although when Hinshelwood returns that could change. Rutter is the 10, and Welbeck is in fine form and is the starting striker. Mitoma is the starting LW but has been out for 5 games.

Brighton’s official X account tweeted pictures of Mitoma smiling and training with the players who have remained in Brighton during this international break, indicating he will be fit to start against Brentford. He had missed 5 consecutive games in the league but has been close calls for the last couple of games, and the 2 week international break clearly has provided him ample time to ramp up and be fit enough to start this weekend.

Gruda has been out with a knee injury and did not make the squad for Crystal Palace. The same for Jack Hinshelwood (ankle) but both are nearing returns, according to the club. GW12 may be too soon for both.

James Milner (strain) is still recovering from his minor muscle issue but could return to the squad to face Brentford.

Brighton Players to Watch:

Mitoma: Pictured in team training, should be fit to start against Brentford.

Gruda: Remains out with knee injury.

Hinshelwood: Nearing return from ankle injury.

Milner: Could return to matchday squad.

GK - Kelleher
RB - Kayode
CB - Van den Berg
CB - Collins
LB - Hickey
CM - Yarmoliuk
CM - Henderson
AM - Damsgaard
RW - Ouattara
LW - Schade
ST - Thiago

Brentford Team News:

Fabio Carvalho has torn his ACL and will miss the remainder of this season and potentially the start of the next recovering. The club and

Keith Andrews has now gone with a 4-2-3-1 in Brentford’s last 4 league games, and has seemingly made a full switch from the early season 5-3-2 system he was opting for, particularly away from home. Brentford have had a tremendous season given the off-season losses of Frank, Mbeumo and Wissa and many expected them to be relegated but they have essentially already guaranteed safety.

The 4-2-3-1 is working tremendously with Henderson and Yarmoliuk in midfield with Damsgaard helping to do some midfield defensive duties while also being the link from midfield to the forwards and Brentford’s chief creator.

Hickey has seemingly made the LB spot his own over Henry and Lewis-Potter. This is a surprise as Lewis-Potter performed well last season but Hickey clearly provides Andrews the profile he wants in a LB.

Dasilva (knee) is back on grass and set to return to team training next month, according to manager Keith Andrews. “Josh is back on the grass and he’s doing pretty well.”

Brentford Players to Watch:

Hickey: Now Brentford’s starting LB over Henry and Lewis-Potter.

Ouattara: Now a locked in starter with Brentford shifting to a 4-2-3-1 more permanently.

Thiago: One of the most in-form strikers in the league.

Carvalho: Has torn his ACL and will miss the remainder of this season at least.

Brighton vs Brentford Preview & Predicted Score:

Brighton will set up how they always have under Hurzeler for the most part, in their 4-2-3-1 with the returning Mitoma providing needed one-on-one ability and creativity from that LW spot that has been missing in recent weeks. Brentford will also likely opt for a 4-2-3-1 with Mikkel Damsgaard as the 10 who provides a lot of running power and elite creativity in that role, feeding the dynamic front three of Schade, Ouattara and Thiago who should have some joy against this average Brighton defence and their high line.

While Brentford would be the happier of the two teams with their start to the season and potentially their recent form, with Mitoma coming back and playing at home it is difficult to see past Brighton creating a lot of chances and scoring 2 or 3 in this one. The question will be how tight can they keep it at the back and how much protection against Brentford’s counter attacks can Baleba and Ayari afford a fairly un-athletic Brighton back four. The international break can absolutely throw out some weird results in the immediate Gameweek after, but Brighton’s talent and ability to control and dictate a game at home leads me to believe Brighton get the job done in this one. I expect a bit of a thriller with two weaker defences facing two talented and potent attacking units, and while we could sit on the fence with a 2-2 prediction, I think Brighton will snatch the victory late on in a 3-2 thriller!

Score Prediction: Brighton 3-2 Brentford
