While the midweek fixtures did actually turn out to be mid for our captaincy too, we’re glad that we can bounce back right away with a quick turnaround for GW31. Here are three candidates who could help you jump back on on the green arrows bandwagon:

Marmoush – MUN (A)

Man City have a new talisman to lead their attack and he’s been flourishing with one good performance after the other, getting on the scoresheet in the most recent fixture against Leicester too. He now takes on a shaky Manchester United defence who rank 15th for xGC at home and have conceded 12 goals (from 6 games) against the top 5 teams for xG, and have just 1 clean sheet from their last 7 PL games!

Since he’s a new addition to the league it wouldn’t be fair to rank him against players who have played 15+ more games than him but in this short stint he has passed the eye test and already has 5 goals and an assist from 8 appearances in the PL which were preceded by 15 goals and 10 assists from jus 17 appearances in the Bundesliga in the first half of this season! The City attack has been impressive again this season ranking 2nd for goals scored, 4th for xG, and 4th for Big Chances Created, and now with the push for the UCL spots they are more likely to be all about the goals.

Marmoush has shown glimpses of what we can expect from and already has 2 double digit hauls from his 8 appearances. With Erling Haaland being out for the next few weeks, the onus lies on him to deliver for his team and establish the dominance he had in Germany. Being a clinical finisher and the focal point of a free flowing attack definitely makes him a strong candidate for this week’s captaincy.

Isak – LEI (A)

Speaking of establishing dominance, Alexander Isak is one name that has lit up this season with his directness in front of goal as well as contributing to the buildup in attack of an exciting Newcastle team. He now takes on a Leicester defence that has been struggling and rank 18th for xGC and have an abysmal aggregate scoreline of 0-18 in their last 7 PL games!

Isak has shown this season why he’s considered among the elite forwards of this generation and he currently ranks 3rd for goals scored, 3rd for xG, 3rd for nPxG, 21st for Big Chances Created, and 5th for Penalty Area Touches. It seems Newcastle have been able to shake off their shaky February form and are now on the rise again competing for the European spots, their attack has been a big part of their competitiveness this season as they rank 8th for goals scored, 5th for xG, and 11th for Big Chances Created.
(So if Isak is not medically cleared for this fixture, the drop off shouldn’t be very significant considering their opposition and other options in attack – Gordon/Murphy can be great additions to your squads)

Isak’s form has been magnificent against the promoted teams this season with 7 goals and 2 assists from 4 games leading him to score 46 points! Even if he plays around 70 minutes in this fixture, that should be enough for him to reach similar heights. Keep tabs open for his fitness news as he is an excellent contender for the armband this Gameweek.

Salah – FUL (A)

We really did see a Mo Salah blank after 9 weeks of returns! And handing him the armband this Gameweek is not so straightforward this week as the other two may just have a higher ceiling. With that said though, Salah faces a Fulham side that on-paper look very strong defensively ranking 3rd for xGC but on the field they have kept just 5 clean sheets so far this season! And with the merciless Liverpool attack against them we can expect another fluid display leading to more goals.

Salah has cemented his PL (and FPL) legacy this season with astonishing numbers and having shattered his own record of most FPL points with a handful of games still left to play. He ranks 1st for goals scored, 1st for xG, 2nd for nPxG, 1st for assists, 3rd for xA, 1st for Big Chances Created, and 1st for Penalty Area Touches. He has been the talisman of a Liverpool attack that clears all other teams by a mile, and continues to rank 1st for goals scored, 1st for xG, and 1st for Big Chances Created.

He also holds a decent record against Fulham with 4 goals and 2 assists from 9 games, and as Fulham have been defensively vulnerable to wider players. This gives Salah an added edge to further lift his ceiling for this fixture making him a strong captaincy option to consider for yet another Gameweek.
