The captaincy party brought some more joy to us in the shape of a bunch of healthy green arrows! With some popular assets missing out in this blank Gameweek 29, we highlight three candidates who could help us navigate through it with their high ceilings:
Haaland – BHA (H)
Little brother Erling finally crawls his way back into the shortlist after a long break as he now takes on a Brighton defence that ranks 14th for xGC in away games and have just two clean sheets (against Southampton and Ipswich) in their last 10 away fixtures in the league. City are in a tough spot right now and will be heavily reliant on their main man to deliver the goals in an attempt to take one step forward to secure their UCL spot for next season.
Despite a start-stop season, Haaland’s numbers have been hovering at the right end of the charts as he currently ranks 2nd for goals scored, 2nd for xG, 1st for nPxG, and 2nd for Penalty Area Touches. While it seems City’s attack has underperformed this season, their stats aren’t too bad seeing them rank 3rd for goals scored, 4th for xG, and 6th for Big Chances Created.
Haaland has enjoyed playing against the Seagulls and has a record of 4 goals and an assist in 4 games which includes City’s only goal in the reverse fixture earlier this season. Brighton have looked the most vulnerable against strikers and are also the team that have conceded the 2nd most penalties in the league so far. When you couple that along with Haaland’s directness and sublime finishing, he is an excellent candidate for this week’s captaincy!
Fernandes – LEI (A)
A screamer of a free kick and 29 points from his last 3 games see captain Bruno Fernandes make his way up next on the shortlist. He takes on Leicester City who rank 18th for xGC and are in terrible form spiraling into relegation, having conceded 13 goals WITHOUT RESPONSE in their last 5 PL games! With just one win from their last five, this could finally be the fixture where Amorim’s men can start building some momentum. From recent performances it appears Bruno is the talisman who could make this side tick.
Manchester United this season rank a lowly 15th for goals scored, 13th for xG, and 12th for Big Chances Created, and this too is because of a massive carry job from Bruno. Individually, he ranks 8th for assists, 8th for xA, 9th for Big Chances Created, 21st for goals scored, 17th for xG, and 31st for nPxG. A team that has an aggregate scoreline of 3-25 in their last 10 should definitely help United boost up their numbers, right!?
Bruno has fared well against Leicester in the past and has an impressive record of 5 goals and 6 assists from 11 games, including a goal and an assist in the reverse fixture that United won comfortably. Set pieces, creativity, and late runs into the box give Bruno multiple avenues to make his impact felt on the fixture that could lead to a big haul, making him a very strong contender for the armband this Gameweek!
Wood – IPS (A)
It’s FPL dreamland once again as the forward with the most FPL points so far takes on a defence that ranks 19th for xGC! Chris Wood is the final name on this week’s list as he looks to get back on the score-sheet against an Ipswich defence that has conceded 21 goals in their last 6 PL games and has only two clean sheets this season!
Chris Wood has been the dark horse this season delivering time and again against the odds, he currently ranks 4th for goals scored, 9th for xG, 12th for nPxG, and has been a big reason for Forest’s incredible campaign. Nottingham Forest rank 10th for goals scored, 15th for xG, and 13th for Big Chances Created, which once again highlight the importance of Chris Wood’s overperformance as they continue to mount the challenge for European spots.
Wood has played against Ipswich 11 times and has 3 goals and 2 assists to his name. However this season, his performance against the promoted teams has been exceptional as he’s scored 4 goals and assisted one leading to 35 points in 4 games! Chris Wood is a tempting option for captaincy this Gameweek, especially for those who are chasing bigger gaps in their mini leagues.
