After a hotly contested battle for captaincy that resulted in just one assist and hence only a small green arrow, we’re back with this week’s shortlist to highlight three candidates who can lead our teams to bigger green arrows this week:

Salah – SOU (H)

The FPL party returns with the best player in the league getting the best fixture of this season. King Mo Salah takes on the Southampton defence who are ranked 20th for xGC and have conceded the most goals in the league so far. Coming in with two consecutive steady 2-0 wins against significantly better defences, this could be the fixture where they break free!

With another attacking return in the previous Gameweek, Salah continues to tick the charts maintaining pole position for most stats, he now ranks 1st for goals scored, 1st for xG, 2nd for nPxG, 1st for assists, 2nd for xA, 1st for Big Chances Created, and 1st for Penalty Area Touches. Liverpool have been sensational in attack this season and rank 1st for goals scored, 1st for xG, and 1st for Big Chances Created. They are now cruising at the top with a 13 point lead and would look to carry forward this momentum to secure the trophy ASAP.

Salah’s record against Southampton is very impressive too with 9 goals and 4 assists in 12 games including a brace in the 3-2 win in the reverse fixture earlier this season. There are no signs of him slowing down and he will very likely be creating more headaches for his opposition this Gameweek, making him an excellent candidate for captaincy!

Palmer – LEI (H)

The frustration levels among FPL managers may be at an all-time high with Palmer after his 5th blank from the last 6, the latest one coming against Southampton in a game where Chelsea scored four and Palmer himself generating an xG of over 1! These underlying numbers will surely result in big points soon and the fixture against Leicester provides a great opportunity as they rank 18th for xGC and have conceded the most goals in away fixtures so far.

As mentioned, Palmer’s numbers remain impressive with him ranking 6th for goals scored, 4th for xG, 5th for nPxG, 10th for assists, 1st for xA, 3rd for Big Chances Created, and 27th for Penalty Area Touches spearheading the Chelsea attack who rank 4th for goals scored, 2nd for xG, and 2nd for Big Chances Created. As we enter the final third of the season, Chelsea would be looking to up the ante for their challenge for a top 4 spot, and such fixtures would be the ones where they would aim for big wins and build on their GD given how tight the competition is.

Palmer’s record against the bottom 5 xGC teams this season reads 4 goals and 2 assists from 7 games and he would be looking to improve it and getting back on the scoresheet. With a decline in his popularity before a favorable fixture, he could be a great candidate for captaincy, as we have seen how high his ceiling can be if he (and his team) realizes the xGI.

Isak – WHU (A)

Alexander Isak completes the set this Gameweek as he takes on a vulnerable West Ham defence that ranks 16th for xGC and has conceded 5th most goals in the league (3rd most at home). As the competition for the UCL spots gets hotter, Newcastle would be looking to jump out of the rut they’re in with a inconsistent form, having 3 losses and 2 wins in the last 5 with an aggregate scoreline of 8-12.

Isak should be set to spearhead the attack for Newcastle which is music to FPL managers as quality forwards have had a great time against West Ham. Isak currently ranks 3rd for goals scored, 3rd for xG, 3rd for nPxG, 18th for assists, 18th for Big Chances Created, and 7th for Penalty Area Touches. Newcastle as a team have played attacking football and are ranked 7th for goals scored, 5th for xG, and 10th for Big Chances Created. This fixture could help them climb the ladder on the PL table as well.

Isak has faced West Ham 4 times scoring 5 goals and assisting 1. Now as he’s in the best form of his career, he would look to build on this record and turn around the result from the reverse fixture. A true differential in a week where two big assets have easier fixtures on paper. Isak could be the key to some big swings especially for those who are trailing in their mini-leagues.
