A full house of attacking returns from our three picks in GW20 was the perfect start from a captaincy POV for us, and now it’s time to highlight three candidates for GW21 who could bring us some big green arrows:

Haaland – BRE (A)

The software update has completed and Erling is back to his usual self scoring three goals in the last two league games for City who have seemed to begun their resurgence after an unusual slump in form. Haaland is up on confidence and will now be leading the line against Brentford who rank 14th for xGC and have conceded 15 goals against the ‘Top 6’ teams in 6 games.

Haaland’s return to form could further bump up his stats which already read so well as he’s ranked 2nd for goals scored, 2nd for xG, 1st for nPxG, and 2nd for Penalty Area Touches being the focal point of an attack that ranks 6th for goals scored, 5th for xG and 8th for Big Chances Created. This has been a hotly contested fixture with 4 of the last 5 games finishing with a one goal deficit, but now with Brentford losing their last 2 home fixtures City would be looking to get another comprehensive win.

Haaland has a great record against Brentford with 3 goals and 1 assist against them in 4 games which include the brace he scored in the reverse fixture leading City to a 2-1 win. City would be looking to further build on the momentum they have and Erling being the focal point of this attack could reap the benefits leading to a big score and making him a strong candidate for this week’s captaincy.

Salah – NFO (A)

He’s here again! The perma captain for some at this point – King Mo Salah! After another goal in the previous gameweek, Salah has now extended his run of attacking returns to 12 consecutive weeks scoring a staggering 147 points in that period! He now faces Nottingham Forest and would be determined to get Liverpool’s revenge for their only loss in the PL this season.

Salah has the league dancing to his tunes and his stats echo melodiously seeing him rank 1st for goals scored, 1st for xG, 2nd for nPxG, 1st for assists, 5th for xA, 3rd for Big Chances Created, and 1st for Penalty Area Touches. He is the main reason for Liverpool to be in such a great spot at just the halfway point of the season leading the attack that ranks 1st for goals scored, 1st for xG, and 1st for Big Chances Created! All this despite having played a game less!

Salah hasn’t had the best of times against Forest with just 2 goals in 4 games against them, but now in his red-hot form he could significantly improve this record and guide Liverpool to a thumping victory to maintain the daylight between them and the others. We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, consistency, spot kicks, creativity and being the focal point of an exquisite attack make him the ever reliable option to consider for captaincy this Gameweek.

B. Fernandes- SOU (H)

A strong performance against arch rivals Liverpool, sees the Manchester United captain make his return to the shortlist after a long long while! He now will be pulling the strings for the United attack against a leaky Southampton defence that ranks 20th for xGC and has conceded 20 goals in 6 games against the ‘Top 6’ teams including a 3-0 defeat to Manchester United in the reverse fixture.

Bruno has been producing good underlying numbers which see him rank 16th for xG, 23rd for nPxG, 6th for assists, 16th for xA, and 11th for Big Chances Created in a hot and cold Manchester United attack that ranks 12th for xG and 11th for Big Chances Created. Bruno urged the team to turn up with the same intensity every game, and if they do that against Southampton, United could win big and start the climb towards the European spots.

The Portuguese midfielder has a love/hate relationship with many FPL managers because of his inconsistent performances but he has cooked against Southampton with 3 goals and 4 assists in 8 games. Being the main creative force of this attack against a weak defence and having penalty duties make him a strong contender for your team’s captaincy.
