Another day, another FPL deadline! The festive fixtures are in full swing as we inch closer to GW19, and here are three candidates who could help you fly into the new year with some big green arrows:

Salah – WHU (A)

Yup, it’s him again! Another goal for the king on Boxing Day added to Salah’s credentials as to why he is the best FPL asset to own this season. Next, he will be taking on a West Ham defence that has only one clean sheet (against Southampton) in their last six fixtures and is ranked 17th for xGC and 19th for xGC in home games!

Salah’s brilliance is a treat for all his owners and reflects in his stats as he now ranks 1st for goals scored, 2nd for xG, 2nd for nPxG, 1st for assists, 8th for xA, 4th for Big Chances Created, and 1st for Penalty Area Touches. Liverpool are now deservedly 7 points clear at the top largely due to their sublime attack that ranks 1st for goals scored, 1st for xG, and 1st for Big Chances Created!

Salah’s form against West Ham has been phenomenal, with 12 goals and 3 assists in 16 games. We’ll reiterate what we’ve been saying for the past few weeks now: consistency, spot kicks, creativity, and being the focal point of an exquisite attack make him the ever-reliable option to consider for captaincy this game week, and indeed most, check out the schedule in the Opta Match Centre.

Palmer – IPS (A)

The second most popular name on the shortlist this year has been Cole Palmer, and a fixture against a defensively vulnerable Ipswich Town side is what could see him pull off another trademark haul to encapsulate an excellent 2024 for him. He’s heading into this fixture with some great momentum, having scored 55 points in the last 6 game weeks. On the other hand, Ipswich have had only one clean sheet so far this season!

Palmer so far has been one of the most reliable FPL assets, which translates from his stats that see him ranked 3rd for goals scored, 3rd for xG, 5th for nPxG, 3rd for assists, 3rd for xA, and 2nd for Big Chances Created. He’s been the guiding light for Chelsea’s attack, which ranks 3rd for goals scored, 2nd for xG, and 2nd for Big Chances Created!

Palmer has had great success with the relegated teams last season, which had similar stats to Ipswich at the time, as he managed to get 7 goals and 4 assists in just 5 appearances! Chelsea will be looking for a strong bounce back after a disappointing result to Fulham to continue to mount pressure on Liverpool and Arsenal. Palmer could be the main man to guide them to a thumping victory, making him an excellent choice for the captain’s armband.

Haaland – LEI (A)

The haul surely has to come now! Erling Haaland had a flying start to the season but has been humbled for the past few weeks, capturing City’s woeful form with a penalty miss on Boxing Day. A fixture against a Leicester side that has conceded 10 goals in their last 3 games and is ranked 19th for xGC could be the perfect opportunity to start the comeback!

Despite the struggles, Haaland still ranks 1st for xG, 1st for nPxG, 2nd for goals scored, and 3rd for Penalty Area Touches, leading the line for a City attack that ranks 4th for xG and 6th for goals scored. Their fixture swing comes at a moment when they need it the most, and a big performance from Erling is surely on the cards.

Haaland has faced Leicester once before when he ended up with a brace and has 4 goals in 2 games against the other 2 promoted teams this season! If you’ve backed him through this rough patch, this game week could be the one where he repays you, making him a very strong contender for this game week’s captaincy.
