Transfer Overview:

Transfer:

  • From Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool

Tranfer Fee:

  • £29.5 million

Contract Length:

  • 5 years. Contract runs until 2030.

Wage:

  •  Rumoured to be around £100k per week plus likely clean sheet, goal, assist and trophy bonuses.

Individual Analysis:

Position:

  • While he was exclusively a right wing back under Xabi Alonso, tasked with mostly focusing on his attacking output, he will play a more traditional right back role under Arne Slot, as he did at Celtic and in Man City’s academy. He was almost certainly bought because of his pace, energy, creativity and goal scoring ability, so his greatest strengths will still be heavily utilised by Slot and he will still be given the license to bomb forward and support Salah on that right hand side.

Role & Stats:

  • Frimpong is a naturally very attacking fullback, with elite pace and dribbling ability as well as an eye for goal and top creative abilities from the right hand side. He is constantly overlapping to create space for his winger and is a good crosser of the ball.
  • He is an elite goal threat from fullback, scoring 5 goals last season from 4.2xG.
  • His 4.2xG in the Bundesliga last season, when compared to Premier League defenders, would have only trailed Josko Gvardiol’s 4.6xG. Whether overlapping or underlapping, Salah is going to provide him with a lot of through balls to put him in great positions to rack up G/A in the final third.
  • Frimpong racked up 5 assists from 4.65 xA last season. That 4.6xA would have trailed only Alexander-Arnold, Lewis-Potter and Leif Davis in the Premier League last season.
  • Frimpong was 1st out of all Bundesliga right backs for touches in the opposition box and 1st for possession won back in the opposition half, which means he is springing counter attacks and putting himself and his team in advantageous attacking situations often.

Expected Minutes:

  • While I do expect him to be the first choice right back, I do think his minutes will be split with Conner Bradley fairly evenly, lowering his FPL ceiling. I expect Frimpong to play a large majority of the games against the bottom 12 sides in the league, given Liverpool will have to do less defending and have so much possession of the ball. Same goes for most games at Anfield, where I again expect Frimpong to play the large majority of minutes.
  • However, against the top 8 sides, particularly away from home, Bradley would likely be the preferred starter as the more balanced right back offering more defensive solidity.

FPL Position:

  • Premium Defender

FPL Analysis:

  • Frimpong is likely to be Premium Defender in FPL, £5.0m minimum given his attacking abilities and the team he plays for.
  • His profile, how popular his name is and the fact he plays for Liverpool means he will likely be one of the 10 highest EO Defenders in FPL to start the season.
  • He will be in a tier with his teammate Kerkez, as well as Ait-Nouri, Hall, , Gabriel, Gvardiol, Lewis-Skelly and the likes as those premium defensive assets on the best teams in the country, who provide an elite ceiling due to their attacking output as well as playing for the best defensive teams in the league.
  • Set pieces do not add any additional value to Frimpong’s FPL profile as he has never really taken them.
  • Is more likely to be rotated in and out of the starting lineup than the other top FPL Defenders, making him a riskier own.

Team Impact:

  • Frimpong’s pace and attacking abilities will allow Salah to potentially play slightly more centrally and focus on goal scoring this season, with Frimpong, Kerkez, Wirtz, Mac Allister and others able to provide greater creativity than Liverpool had last season.
  • When Frimpong starts at RB, Kerkez might be given slightly less freedom to bomb forward and we should watch for this dynamic.
  • The star Dutch fullback is almost certainly going to help improve Liverpool’s goal tally from last season. He is just so dynamic in a multitude of ways, from his pacey runs in behind, the dribbling ability, crossing ability or his ability to drive into the box and finishing well for a defender.
  • Frimpong is an elite pressing fullback, and wins back possession in the opposition half a lot. If he raises their ceiling as  pressing unit, that only means more goals for Liverpool.
  • I don’t think the concerns about his defensive frailties are actually much of a concern in this Liverpool team. Frimpong is far more willing and able to sprint back and get into defensive position when caught out on the counter than Trent ever was, and Konate and Virgil provide the perfect cover when he does bomb forward. I don’t think he will make Liverpool’s defence statistically worse.

FPL Price Range Prediction:

  • £5.5m-£6.0m

My Prediction:

  • Frimpong will be the less desirable of the two new Liverpool fullbacks in FPL for me, as some of his defensive frailties means Conner Bradley will rotate in as the starting right back and they will split the minutes more evenly. Whereas I tend to think Kerkez starts the majority of Liverpool’s Premier League games and it’s a less even split of the left back minutes between him and Robertson compared to Frimpong and Bradley.
  • Frimpong won’t be in my FPL team in GW1 for these reasons, however if we do come to realise that he is the clear preferred starter over Bradley, that will have to change. Purely from a skillset standpoint, I think he is the best and most complete attacking fullback we now have in the Premier League and if his expected minutes are strong, he will produce attacking returns plus clean sheets at a rate that will make not owning the Dutchman difficult for FPL managers.
  • For periods of games where Liverpool are playing majority bottom half of the table teams (for eg Nov 29 – Dec 6, Liverpool play West Ham, Sunderland and Leeds in a row) Frimpong will be transferred into my team as his ceiling for those games will be as high as any Defender in FPL while priced more reasonably than Alexander-Arnold ever was.

CS and G/A Prediction:

  • 9 clean sheets

  • 4 goals

  • 7 assists
