Tranfer Fee:
£100 million + £16.5 million in add-ons.
Contract Length:
5 years. Contract runs until 2030.
Wage:
£200,000 per week plus likely goal, assist and trophy bonuses.
Individual Analysis:
Position:
His natural position is the number 10 position, given freedom to roam all across the pitch. For Bayer Leverkusen he did often play as a left sided 10 or occasionally in a left sided striker role playing alongside a more traditional 9. He may be used in a false 9 role on occassion at Liverpool.
Role & Stats:
He will operate within the final third of the pitch. He is a complete player and will be looking to create high-quality chances and score goals as well as link play within the final third.
Wirtz is an elite passer and creator within the final third. Since the start of the 23/24 season, only Mohamed Salah (28) has more assists in Europe’s top 5 leagues than Florian Wirtz, who has 23. Wirtz is 5th in Europe’s top 5 leagues for Chances Created from Open Play with 124, trailing only Salah, Fernandes, Odegaard and Palmer.
Wirtz is also an elite dribbler, with the 4th most completed dribbles in Europe’s top 5 leagues across the last 2 seasons, trailing only Yamal, Kudus and Doku.
The German star also has 21 Bundesliga goals to his name over the last 2 seasons, as well as 6 goals in 9 Champions League games this season.
Expected Minutes:
Guaranteed starter nearly every game and unlikely to be substituted off in games unless Liverpool are winning by a significant margin.
FPL Position:
Premium Midfielder
FPL Analysis:
Wirtz is going to cost a pretty penny to start the season. He alongside Salah are going to lead this dynamic Liverpool attack that scored the most goals in the Premier League last season.
He is going to be a Premium Midfielder and I would think about his potential value and output to be similar to the other best attacking midfielders we have seen over the years in FPL; the likes of De Bruyne, Palmer, Fernandes and the likes.
He did take penalties at Leverkusen however we know that Salah takes penalties for Liverpool. This could however provide added value for Wirtz while Salah is at AFCON this season.
With Alexander-Arnold leaving, Wirtz could step into the role of Liverpool’s chief set-piece taker. He took free kicks for Leverkusen.
Team Impact:
If Wirtz does play in the 10 role, that means Gravenberch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister are splitting the minutes between the 2 deeper midfield spots. That makes Szoboszlai a less viable FPL option.
It is hard to see how Wirtz does not improve Liverpool’s goal output this season given his passing and goal scoring abilities. This could mean Gakpo, Diaz and even Salah score more goals this season than last.
For Salah specifically, this could mean he is tasked with less of the dominant creative role he had to play last season. With Wirtz creating and Frimpong overlapping, Salah may find himself finishing moves more than he did last season, rather than creating them from that right hand side which would likely mean scoring more goals and providing less assists.
