What are Chips in FPL?

Fantasy Premier League (FPL) has a set of special “chips” designed to give managers a tactical boost and help gain an edge over the competition. Each chip can be used once per season (except the Wildcard, which is available twice) and has a unique impact on your team’s performance for a single game week. Here’s a rundown of the different chips and some tips on when to use them.

1. What is the Wildcard chip?

The Wildcard allows you to make unlimited transfers for one game week without any points deduction. It’s a powerful tool for overhauling your team, whether due to injuries, poor form, or fixture shifts. You get two Wildcards per season: one for the first half and one for the second half. The first Wildcard must be used by the end of December, while the second becomes available in January.

When to use it: A popular strategy is to save your Wildcard for the international breaks, when player form and injuries may require significant changes. Alternatively, you could use it ahead of a Double Gameweek (when some teams play twice) to maximize your team’s scoring potential.

2. What is the Free Hit chip?

The Free Hit chip lets you make unlimited transfers for one game week only, after which your team reverts to its original line-up. It’s ideal for navigating a Blank Gameweek, when some teams don’t play due to fixture rescheduling, or for a Double Gameweek.

When to use it: Use the Free Hit when your team is missing several key players in a particular game week due to blanks or tough matchups. It’s also useful for building a strong team for a Double Gameweek without committing to long-term changes.

3. What is the Bench Boost chip?

The Bench Boost chip allows points scored by your bench players to count toward your total score for one game week. This chip works best when you have a full squad of starters, including the bench, who are likely to deliver points.

When to use it: It’s often combined with a Wildcard right before a Double Gameweek, allowing you to load up on players with multiple fixtures. This can maximize your total points, as all 15 players will have the chance to contribute.

4. What is the Triple Captain chip?

The Triple Captain chip multiplies your captain’s points by three instead of the usual two. It’s a high-risk, high-reward chip that can deliver huge returns if used on a player with a favourable fixture.

When to use it: The optimal time to use the Triple Captain is usually during a Double Gameweek, when your chosen player has two chances to score points. Look for players in top form and with favourable matchups. Check out our Hot Picks to see who the best players for this are!

Final Tip: Plan your chip usage strategically. Combining chips, like Wildcard + Bench Boost or Free Hit + Triple Captain, during Double or Blank Game weeks can yield massive points, giving you a strong advantage in your mini-leagues. Use them wisely to gain a critical edge in FPL!
