How Do Auto-Substitutions Work?

Auto-substitutions are an important feature in Fantasy Premier League (FPL). It ensures you don’t lose points if a player in your starting lineup doesn’t play. Here’s how they work:

Why Auto-Substitutions Happen

Auto-substitutions happen when a player in your starting 11 fails to play due to injury, suspension, or being left out. FPL automatically substitutes the first available player from your bench into the starting lineup.

Players’ Substitution

Generally, substitutions happen in order of the bench. This means if your first choice of goalkeeper doesn’t play, the goalkeeper on your bench will be substituted. However, If that goalkeeper is unavailable, then auto-substitution follows the same process for the outfield player. It usually starts with the player at the lowest position on the bench.

Auto-Substitutions and Points

Note that only players in your starting lineup and qualified to play earn points. For auto-substituted players, points are earned based on their performance. In a situation where a bench player replaces a non-playing starter, they will earn points for goals, assists, or clean sheets.

Auto-substitutions are helpful in FPL as they give you a backup plan. As a result, your team stays competitive even when unexpected changes occur.

Pro tip: To benefit from this auto-substitution feature, it is recommended to manage your bench wisely and use tools like FPL Player Rankings and FPL Guidebook to guide your strategy for each game week.
