Firstly, let’s have a refresher on the rules for the Assistant Manager chip:

  • The Chip is available to use from Gameweek 24 onwards.
  • Once you activate the Assistant Manager chip, you will score points based upon their clubs’ results for 3 Game weeks in a row.
  • The scoring works as such:
  • 6 points for a win
  • 3 points for a draw
  • 1 point per goal the team scores
  • 2 points for a clean sheet
  • Table Bonus: If the Assistant Manager you choose is facing a club that is at least 5 places higher in the Premier League table at the start of the Gameweek, you get an additional 10 points for a win or an additional 5 points for a draw.
  • You will not be able to use other chips while your Assistant Manager chip is active.
  • Your Assistant Manager does count towards your 3 players per club limit – so you will only be able to own 2 players from the club of your Assistant Manager while the chip is active.
  • Each Assistant Manager will have a set price of between £0.5m-£1.5m and this will come out of your £100m total budget – so this is something FPL managers will have to plan for.
  • Double Game weeks also count for your Assistant Manager, so this is something to factor in.
  • Selecting your Assistant Manager does not count towards your free transfers. However, if you want to change your Assistant Manager during the 3 Game weeks the chip is active, that will cost a free transfer
  • If the Assistant Manager you selected happens to leave his current club for any reason, you will still score points based on the original clubs results.

Assistant Manager Prices:

We have four different price points for Assistant Managers in FPL this season: £1.5m, £1.1m, £0.8m and £0.5m.

The £1.5m’s:

These are the Managers of the top 5 teams in the Premier League table, bar Nottingham Forest. They are your safest bets for 3 or 4 wins across the 3 Gameweeks that your Assistant Manager chip will be active. However, you likely stand to gain 0 Table Bonus Points by selecting these Assistant Managers.

Target (Green Light):

  • Arne Slot: Arguably the best team in Europe so far this season. Could target Gameweek 24-26 – Bournemouth (A), Everton (A), Wolves (H), Man City (A).
  • Eddie Howe: Most in form team in the Premier League at the minute. 5 wins on the bounce. Could target Gameweek 28-30 – West Ham (A), Crystal Palace (H), Brentford (H).

Avoid (Red Light):

  • Enzo Maresca: Chelsea have been too inconsistent of late and are too frail defensively to trust, especially at his £1.5m price tag.
  • Pep Guardiola: City might have temporarily returned to winning ways, but the performances still have not been good. City were arguably outplayed by Leicester in Gameweek 19 despite the 2-0 victory. Hard to see how Guardiola is value for his price.
  • Mikel Arteta: Arsenal have failed to string together 3 successive league wins so far this season. With Saka out injured, Arsenal are a more inconsistent team that struggle to break teams down. Hard to argue he is worth the £1.5m price-tag.

The £1.1m’s:

These are a group of good Managers who lead teams that are fighting for Europa League and Conference League football next season, or in the case of Forest, potentially Champions League football. These are choices for your Assistant Manager chip that toe the line between a level of safety and also some ability to target Table Bonus Points if you are brave enough to bet on their teams taking a big scalp.

Target (Green Light):

  • Andoni Iraola: Bournemouth are unbeaten in their last 8 Premier League games, winning 5 of them. They are a team that have performed well by most important metrics all season and have quality players all over the pitch. Arsenal and Man City have suffered defeat at the hands of Iraola’s Cherries this season. Could target Gameweek 35-37 – Arsenal (A), Aston Villa (H) and Man City (A).
  • Marco Silva: Fulham are unbeaten in their last 5 games including a win against Chelsea and a draw against Liverpool and Arsenal. The win against Chelsea would have totaled 18 points (16 for the win + 2 for 2 goals scored) for Silva owners. The draws against Liverpool and Arsenal would have totaled 10 points and 9 points respectively. Could target Gameweek 31-33 – Liverpool (H), Bournemouth (A) and Chelsea (H).
  • Fabian Hurzeler: Brighton have performed very well against the leagues best teams this season. Hurzeler’s side have beaten Man City and Newcastle this season. They have taken a point in against Forest and in both games against Arsenal. Could target Gameweek 24-26 – Nottingham Forest (A), Chelsea (H) and Southampton (A).

Avoid (Red Light):

  • Nuno Espirito Santo: Unlikely to be able to gain any Table Bonus Points with Nuno. As great as Forest have been, Slot and Howe are better choices out of the top 5 teams in the league.
  • Ange Postecoglou: Spurs have been incredibly inconsistent this season and are ravished with injuries in defence right now. They have won 1 of their last 5 and Ange’s seat might start getting hot.

The £0.8m’s:

These are Managers you want to target for your Assistant Manager chip if you decide to play a high-risk, high-reward strategy and are looking to take full advantage of the opportunity for Table Bonus Points. If you need to climb the overall rankings and your league tables, this might be the strategy for you.

Target (Green Light):

  • Unai Emery: Villa have underwhelmed this season but are 8th as of Gameweek 21 and when their core players are fit, are a good side capable of beating anyone on any day. They got a win against Man City this season, and last season beat Arsenal twice as well as took a point from Liverpool. Be aware that currently, the only teams Emery could provide an opportunity for Table Bonus Points are the top 3 teams in the league but all of this is subject to change. Could target Gameweek 32-34 – Southampton (A), Newcastle (H) and Man City (A).
  • Ruben Amorim: Amorim has already got a win against Man City and draw against the league leaders Liverpool. Their current league position also provides a large pool of opponents that provide the opportunity for Table Bonus Points. While Amorim is by no means my top choice, if you are looking for maximum reward, Amorim has the potential to get you close to that. Could target Gameweek Gameweek 29-31 – Leicester (A), Nottingham Forest (A) and Man City (H).
  • Oliver Glaser: Glasner’s side have gotten draws against Aston Villa, Newcastle, Man City, Bournemouth and Chelsea this season and a win against Brighton – all teams 5 or more places above them in the league table. Palace are solid defensive team with a trio in attack of Mateta, Eze and Sarr that can produce against anyone. Could target Gameweek 26-28 – Fulham (A), Aston Villa (H) and Ipswich (H).

Avoid (Red Light):

  • Thomas Frank: Frank’s side have failed to take any points from opponents that his owners would gain Table Bonus Points from this season outside of their win against Newcastle. There are better options.
  • Vitor Pereira: One of the 5 worst teams in the league. Making Pereira your Assistant Manager would be a needless risk for likely little gain.

The £0.5m’s:

These are Managers you should not be considering for your Assistant Manager chip unless you enjoy increasing your own stress levels and/or enjoy losing.

Avoid (Red Light):

  • Ian McKenna: He would be the best of the bunch, as Ipswich have taken points in half of their games (3 wins, 7 draws) and got a win against Chelsea, but there are much better options if you are looking to capitalise on Table Bonus Points.
  • Ruud Van Nistelrooy: Leicester have lost 5 in a row. Little more needs to be said.
  • Ivan Juric: The worst team in the league.
  • Graham Potter: Now missing Bowen, Antonio and Füllkrug from their forward line. Hard to envision a new manager bounce.
  • Everton Manager: Hard to see Moyes making this group of players perform that much better when he struggled with West Ham’s squad last season. They cannot score goals from open play. Aim higher!

It is important to remember that form, injuries and league position will all change as we reach Gameweek 24 and beyond. These will all be key factors in deciding who your Assistant Manager will be and so nothing about your plan should be set in stone quite yet, but planning ahead for such an important chip in this FPL season is definitely the smart move!
