Master the official 2026 World Cup fantasy game. Learn how to stretch your $100m budget, utilize substitutions, and maximize your boosters.
The official FIFA World Cup Fantasy 2026 game is now live, giving fantasy managers around the world the chance to build squads, chase mini-league glory, and compete throughout the biggest football tournament on the planet.
The game officially launched on May 26 ahead of the tournament kickoff on June 11, and already millions of managers are building drafts around stars like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane and Vinícius Júnior.
But unlike Fantasy Premier League, World Cup Fantasy plays very differently.
Manual substitutions, live captain changes, boosters, scouting bonuses and knockout-stage transfer rules make the game far more active and aggressive than standard fantasy football.
If you are new to the format, here’s everything you need to know.

The basics are fairly simple.
Every manager receives a starting budget of $100m to build a 15-player squad made up of:
You then score points based on your players’ real-life performances during the tournament.
Once the knockout stages begin, every manager receives an automatic $5m budget increase, raising the total budget to $105m to account for the higher-value players remaining in the competition.
Unlike FPL, player prices are completely fixed throughout the tournament. Prices will not rise or fall based on ownership or performance.
There are also limits on how many players you can own from one country depending on the tournament stage.
| Tournament Stage | Max Players Per Country |
|---|---|
| Group Stage | 3 |
| Round of 32 | 3 |
| Round of 16 | 4 |
| Quarter-finals | 5 |
| Semi-finals | 6 |
| Final | 8 |
This becomes especially important later in the tournament when stacking favourites like France, England, Brazil or Argentina becomes more viable.
The game allows several valid formations:
Your squad initially loads in a default 4-4-2, but you can switch freely between valid formations.
Players earn points for their real-life performances during matches.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Appearance (up to 60 mins) | +1 |
| Appearance (60+ mins) | +1 |
| Assist | +3 |
| Yellow card | -1 |
| Red card | -2 |
| Own goal | -2 |
| Winning a penalty | +2 |
| Conceding a penalty | -1 |
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Clean sheet (60+ mins) | +5 |
| Goal scored | +9 |
| Penalty save | +3 |
| Every 3 saves | +1 |
| Each additional goal conceded after first | -1 |
Goalkeepers can become huge assets because save points stack quickly across tournaments.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Clean sheet | +5 |
| Goal scored | +7 |
| Each additional goal conceded after first | -1 |
Attacking full-backs and defenders from elite nations become extremely valuable because of the strong clean sheet rewards.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Goal scored | +6 |
| Clean sheet | +1 |
| Every 3 tackles | +1 |
| Every 2 chances created | +1 |
Creative midfielders can rack up points even without scoring.
| Action | Points |
|---|---|
| Goal scored | +5 |
| Every 2 shots on target | +1 |
This especially rewards high-volume shooters and penalty takers.
Players receive an additional:
One of the newest additions for 2026 is the Scouting Bonus.
If a player:
they receive an extra:
This massively rewards differential picks and could become one of the biggest mini-league swing factors.

Captaincy is one of the most important strategy elements in the game.
Your captain scores double points.
However, FIFA World Cup Fantasy allows managers to switch captains during a live round.
You can:
This creates the famous “stick or twist” strategy.
Example:
Because of this, spreading premium players across different kickoff windows becomes hugely important.
Your vice-captain only activates if:
If you manually substitute players or switch captains during the round, vice-captain auto protection disappears.
This is where World Cup Fantasy becomes completely different from FPL.
All bench players score points normally.
However, their points only count if they are manually or automatically substituted into your XI.
You can:
Example:
Once removed, the original player cannot return to your XI.
Automatic substitutions only happen if:
That includes:
If auto-subs remain active:
Once you make a manual move, auto-subs are cancelled entirely for that round.
The game uses a rolling lockout system.
Locked Player:
A player whose match is currently in progress.
Unlocked Player:
A player yet to play.
You CAN:
You CANNOT:
This creates huge tactical depth throughout every matchday.

Managers receive five special boosters throughout the tournament.
Only one can be used per round.

because unlimited transfers are already active there.
Unlike other boosters, Wildcard cannot be reversed once confirmed.

FIFA will unlock it once Round 3 ends and knockout stages begin.
Transfer allocations change depending on tournament stage.

Transfers cannot be reversed once confirmed.
The game includes several ranking systems.
Compete globally against every manager.
You rank against fans supporting the same nation as you.
Your points contribute toward your chosen confederation’s total.
Managers can create:
Perfect for friend groups, workplaces and creator communities.
The biggest mistake new players make is treating World Cup Fantasy like FPL.
This format rewards aggression and constant activity.
To maximize points:
Because the tournament is short, every decision matters far more than over a normal league season.
One explosive captain switch or perfectly timed bench substitution can completely transform your ranking overnight.
That chaos is exactly what makes FIFA World Cup Fantasy so fun.
