Burnley vs Chelsea Predicted Lineups, Odds, Preview & Prediction

Turf Moore is always somewhat of a test for the cream of the Premier League crop; can you do it on a windy day in stoke turned in to can you do it on a windy day at Turf Moore over recent years. And now, with Chelsea sitting third in the league and looking like (very) dark horses to crash the party that is the title race between Arsenal and Manchester City, the stakes for the Blues are a little higher than they have been in almost a decade of not really competing for league titles. As well as the league table this game is about pride for the Clarets, who are desperate to end a humiliating run of six consecutive home defeats to the Blues, while Chelsea look to make it 5 wins out of 6 in the league and to pull away from the chasing pack.

Chelsea are in fine form, having won 4 of their last 5 in the league including a big London derby win over a good Spurs team, but with a loss to Sunderland thrown in there, Chelsea and Maresca will look to prove they are different from previous inconsistent Chelsea teams who had purple patches and fell short of expectations with a win over prime relegation candidates. A few weeks ago Burnley were riding high off the back consecutive wins over Leeds and Wolves, but now, after defeats to Arsenal and a crushing late West Ham winner in a 3-2 thrilling loss, Burnley’s confidence will be low. What Scott Parker’s Burnley team are compared to Kompany’s team last time around, is a lot more pragmatic and they will need to be against a high-flying Chelsea side that has tremendous attacking depth even with Cole Palmer injured. It is hard to see past a Chelsea win in this one but you never know, weird things happen after international breaks!

Premier League Head-to-Head Record:

While this has been a one sided head-to-head over recent or even less recent years, as many would expect, over the last 5 meetings in the Premier League Chelsea have only won 3 of those with 2 draws thrown in there, so the Blues have not had it all their own way. The last meeting between these teams was actually a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, however the last meeting at Turf Moore did not go so well for Burnley suffering a 0-4 loss. One thing that is guaranteed in this tie is goals, with an aggregate score of 13-4 over their last 5 with every game hitting the over 1.5 goals mark.

Burnley Team News:

Speaking on why Hartman was sent back from Dutch national team camp, Scott Parker informed the media that “[Hartman] had come away with a little bit of an illness, so I think the national team decided it was probably best to send him back. He came back the first day and he was still ill. But he’s been up and training with us since then. He’s over that and he’s back with us”, and so it very much sounds like Hartman is fine and will start.

Speaking on Broja who was subbed off against England after 15 minutes during the international break, Parker revealed Firstly, [Broja’s] okay. It’s not as bad as certainly how it looked or it was when I was watching it and it looks that it’s fine, really. I’m hoping that Armando will be available for the weekend, so everything that’s come back seems really positive. He was on the grass [on Wednesday and Thursday]”. Good news and he could play a key part off the bench against his former club.

With limited fresh injury news, I would expect Scott Parker to put out an unchanged starting XI. This is his preferred starting lineup of late with Tuanzebe now fit as Esteve’s CB partner, and Florentino and Cullen in the double pivot in midfield with Ugochukwu ahead as the 10, and Flemming his preferred starting striker.

Burnley Players to Watch:

Broja: Injured for Serbia playing against England. Parker believes he will be fit for tomorrow’s game.

Hartman: Illness was the cause of his early return to Burnley from Dutch national team but he is fine and will start.

Flemming: Has become Burnley’s starting striker despite the solid start from Lyle Foster this season.

Ugochukwu: Has moved from a deeper midfield role to a nominal number 10 in recent weeks.

Chelsea Team News:

Enzo Maresca revealed terrible news for Chelsea faithful in his Friday press conference, as Palmer has suffered a setback and will be out even longer than first anticipated. Maresca said “He is probably not available for tomorrow for sure, Barcelona for sure or Arsenal for sure. Unfortunately, he had an accident at home where he hit his toe, it is nothing important but he won’t be back in the next week… We don’t know [how long he’ll be out], it’s fractured. The only thing we know he is not available for this week and next week”. The lack of timeline and clarity make this concerning and given it’s a fractured toe, I would expect Palmer to not return until late December at best.

Pedro Neto and Benoit Badiashille were both pictured in team training on Monday and will almost certainly be fit to start this weekend against Burnley.

Cole Palmer  is still not training with on grass and therefore is still a ways away from rejoining team training and even further from starting games. Palmer did not go away with England on national team duty which was to be expected but if he was even close to returning he might have been selected. Maresca prior to the win over Wolves in GW11 said “We hope so but with Cole, we try to schedule the beginning and then we need to review that. We go day by day with Cole. He is not taking any sessions with the team”. Nothing positive to report on Palmer yet but the original expectation was to have him back some time in December.

Badiashile was originally slated to return after the international break, as Maresca stated himself that “We have Benoit Badiashile that can probably be available after the international break and for us, that is huge news”, and so as long as Badiashile has had no setbacks, he should make the squad for Burnley.

Enzo Fernandez revealed he has been dealing with a bone edema for several months that has worsened in recent weeks and therefore he did not go away with the Argentinian national team this break. Fernandez revealed “I’ve had bone edema for four months now, and I think it’s gotten worse in recent weeks. I’ve been talking with the medical staff because I have a problem with my knee, and we decided I should rest”. I would imagine the two weeks off resting and doing light training and recovery will stand Enzo in good stead to start against Burnley.

Lavia is out for at least the next month due to a quadriceps injury, according to Bobby Vincent of Football London. A sad story when a player is this injury riddled, but it’s also hard to expect anything else for young Lavia after a brutal last 2 years with injuries.

Chelsea Players to Watch:

Palmer: Expected back in December, will not play in GW12 or GW13.

Fernandez: Did not go away with Argentinian’s national team to rest bone edema but will be fit to start vs Burnley.

Badiashille: Expected back after the international break.

Neto: Dealing with groin issue he picked up against Wolves in GW11.

Lavia: Expected back in December.

Burnley vs Chelsea Preview & Predicted Score:

Chelsea will set up in the 4-2-3-1 formation Maresca has settled on over the past 18 months or so, with Joao Pedro likely taking Palmer’s role as the nominal 10, with Delap starting as the striker and two of Neto, Estevao or Garnacho on the wings – a powerful and talented forward line against a Burnley team that will spend most of the game without the ball attempting to keep Chelsea out. That is why Delap and Joao Pedro should both start instead of a more traditional midfield type in the 10 role. Burnley will almost certainly also start in a 4-2-3-1, given that is the system Parker has shifted in favour of over the last 4 or 5 games, and he stuck with it against league leaders Arsenal so no reason to abandon it now in fear of an opponent.

While Turf Moore will be at Burnley’s aid, Chelsea’s form (4 wins in 5 in the league) and overwhelming talent advantage should be too much to overcome for the Clarets. I don’t think after an international break in likely terrible weather, that Chelsea will blow Burnley out of the water with a 4-0 or anything but I do think Chelsea professionally and routinely get the job done and take all 3 points. 0-2 in favour of Chelsea sounds about right to me!

Score Prediction: Burnley 0-2 Chelsea
