Our GW9 Brentford vs Liverpool predicted lineups, preview, team overviews, H2H record, betting odds and predicted score.
Liverpool enter this game off the back of a historic slump that they ended in Frankfurt Wednesday night, losing 4 in a row in all competitions including 3 in a row in the league. That leaves them now 3rd, 5 points behind Arsenal and needing to fix some major issues tactically and personnel wise if they are to regain title winning form. Salah and Mac Allister being dropped in favour of Ekitike and Jones helped massively, and with some tactical adjustments from Slot that game Liverpool’s press was much more effective and they were dominant. This is a good chance to carry that momentum into a game against a club they have won the last 5 league meetings against in Brentford. Brentford were prime relegation candidates when the season began, after losing Thomas Frank as well as Mbeumo and Wissa. However are currently 13th in the table with 10 points, having won 2 of their last 3 games. Keith Andrews has found the right system and balance and is getting the good performances out of his players, and you have budding stars like Schade, Damsgaard and Thiago producing enough at the top end. Will Brentford pull of an incredible shock and make it 4 losses in a row for the Reds or will Slot’s men extend their winning streak over Brentford in the Premier League?

Liverpool have dominated this head-to-head over recent meetings which extend through the time Klopp and Frank were Managers of the respective clubs through to Arne Slot and Keith Andrews, although this will be Andrews first game facing Liverpool as the Brentford Manager. This is one of the most one sided tie’s in the Premier League over recent years with Liverpool winning all of the last 5 meetings, scoring 12 to Brentford’s 1. Liverpool have won 6 of the 8 meetings in the short time Brentford have been a Premier League club, with the 1 draw and 1 Brentford win rounding it out.

Keith Andrews speaking in his Friday press conference stated “The players are in a good place. We are pretty much as we were… Aaron Hickey won’t make this weekend, but he will be back in training in the next few days. The rest of the boys are pretty much available”. Hickey had started and played near enough the full games in GW6 and 7 prior to picking up his injury. It seems it is a short term injury and
Keith Andrews will likely stick with a back-5 for Liverpool as it has been something they have struggled to defend transitions against while attemting to break down these low blocks.
Kelleher and Henderson play their first games against Liverpool as opposition since leaving the club.
With Hickey out, Ajer could play LWB as he played LB last weekend, but in a back-5 vs Manchester City in GW7 Ajer played as the right centre-back of a back-5 and should do so again here with Lewis-Potter likely playing LWB. Alternatively Ajer could play LWB with Pinnock coming into the team to play CB.
The midfield and front-2 pick themselves – they are guaranteed starters.
Hickey: Out for this game, could return next weekend.
Ajer: Could start at RCB as he did in GW7 or LWB. Think RCB is likelier.
Lewis-Potter: Should start at LWB with Hickey out.
Kelleher: Makes first appearance against Liverpool as opposition.
Henderson: Also making first appearance against Liverpool as an opponent.

Arne Slot speaking to the media on Friday revealed that “Jeremie Frimpong is not in a good place, he won’t play today, tomorrow or next week. Hamstring injuries take a while”. That was to be expected and Frimpong was not a major factor in starting games at the moment as Liverpool find the right balance in their starting lineup to get the best out of their star players.
Slot also informed the media that “Alexander (Isak) is not too bad. He is a question mark for the weekend so we will see where he is and that is the same with Ryan Gravenberch”, so Isak feeling something in his groin is not a long term concern but it likely keeps him from starting this weekend, especially with the form Ekitike is in. Ekitike, Gakpo and Salah is the likely starting front-3.
Gravenberch is a huge miss for Liverpool, but after the performances of Jones, Szoboszlai and Wirtz midweek Slot will feel confident he can form a midfield trio that can run this game for his team and protect his defence enough.
Lastly Slot revealed “Alisson Becker is also not in the squad”, so Mamardashvili starts at least 1 more league game.
Speaking on Salah’s form, Slot said “Players miss chances and he is a human being. We are not used to him missing chances… The main thing is that he always has scored goals for Liverpool. The last thing I worry about is Mo scoring goals again. He’s done that his entire life and I expect him to do that again in the coming weeks and months”. Slot seems very far away from having given up on Salah or wanting to drop him. He will start against Brentford.
Liverpool were much better against Frankfurt in and out of possession. Getting Robertson into the team for Kerkez meant Liverpool had a better passer who can progress the ball from more angles in their backline, which was big. It was displayed perfectly in Liverpool’s first goal with a beautiful assist from Robertson from inside his own half!
Szoboszlai and Jones were excellent in midfield and will start again in midfield. Mac Allister will have to be dropped and Gravenberch may not be fit. If Gravenberch is fit, he would likely start and then one of Szoboszlai or Jones may shift to right-back to allow Wirtz to stay in the team and in his best position. Wirtz was excellent against Frankfurt and notched 2 assists.
Ekitike, Gakpo and Isak worked much better than Isak, Salah and Gakpo had been working as a trio due to the vast gap between Ekitike and Salah in their ability out of possession and the form Ekitike is in in front of goal.
After 4 straight losses some changes need to be made from Slot to his starting lineup. Mac Allister can’t start at the moment along with having Isak and Salah in the team for out of possession reasons.
Mac Allister has been off the pace and out of form and really hurting Liverpool out of possession but also in it. Liverpool immediately looked a better team and created a lot of chances once Jones and Wirtz came on to the pitch.
Szoboszlai should be Liverpool’s starting right back for the next few games at least while Liverpool and Slot work through their tactical issues. Szoboszlai’s passing and quality on the ball is what Liverpool need from their defence with Trent now gone and Konate and Kerkez not being high level passers. He provides progressive passing and ability to switch play and find passing angles from deep that Bradley and Frimpong do not.
Curtis Jones has taken another jump as a player. He is an even better progressive passer this season and is passing forward faster than ever before – so adding that to his press resistance, height, phyiscality, legs and pressing as well as the combined ability to play deeper as well as add things in the final third is exactly what Liverpool need from Gravenberch’s partner right now. Jones has had good link up with Wirtz also which is key. His out of possession quality is what gets him in this team over a Mac Allister who has been dealing with fitness and form issues of late.
Isak started and got his first goal contribution in the league for Liverpool with the assist for Gakpo. Slot spoke on Isak on Friday stating Now he’s had his five or six weeks of pre-season, fitness wide he is close to the level he should be. Now we can judge him in a fair way from now on. His pre-season has finished now, he’s played a few games, so we see where he is in the coming weeks”. He will of course start against United and it is big news for Slot to state that Isak’s pre-season is over. Expect to see Slot comfortable to play him a full 90 minutes now if need be.
Gravenberch: Missed the Champions League game with a knock that could also keep him out this weekend. Not long term.
Isak: Not considered a long term groin injury at all but Isak likely makes the bench at best against Brentford.
Alisson: Still out.
Frimpong: Facing an extended period out with a hamstring injury.
Mac Allister: Too out of form and fitness to start. Starting him with Salah and Isak causing too many out of possession struggles.
Jones: Needed in midfield for control and out of possession prowess.
Wirtz: Has to start. Liverpool immediately improved when he came on against Chelsea and Manchester United. Got 2 assists vs Frankfurt.
Ekitike: Been playing too well not to start either LW or striker. Scored midweek.
