Manchester City vs Everton Predicted Lineups, Preview, Odds & Prediction

The Jack Grealish derby (he can’t actually play in this game) – winner gets full custody next season. In all seriousness this should be a great game, with both teams coming of big wins heading in to the international break. Manchester City are undefeated in their last 4 league games, winning 3 against Manchester United, Burnley and Brentford and drawing with Arsenal. You could argue the wins have come against poor opposition but the ruthlessness they dispatched those teams with was not something City did routinely last season. They are still clearly an improved team now sit 5th in the league after a shaky start to the season, only 3 points behind Arsenal. With Haaland playing the best football of his career and looking as complete a player as he ever has, as well as Marmoush and Ait-Nouri returning, they look in good shape. Everton are riding high after ending Crystal Palace’s 19 game unbeaten run in all competitions while maintaining their own undefeated streak on their new home ground the Hill Dickinson stadium. Everton are becoming a difficult out for just about anyone in the league with a much improved attack this season with Grealish and Ndiaye simply being one of the better wing duo’s in the league. Their form away from home has been less impressive with their 2 losses of course being in away games. It is a good chance for Manchester City to show they might be serious title contenders by handling business against a good team while it is a chance for Everton to show they aren’t one team playing in Liverpool and a clearly worse version outside of it, and really build the foundation for their best season in over a decade.

Premier League Head-to-Head Record:

Manchester City have dominated this head-to-head during the Pep era. Everton’s last Premier League win over City took place all the way back in 2017. Over their last 5 league meetings City have won 4 and then there was the 1-1 draw at the Etihad last season which was right in the middle of City’s horrendous patch of form. City have scored 11 goals to Everton’s 2 across the last 5 games between these two sides, it truly has been a mismatch and an almost guaranteed 3 points for Pep’s side.

Manchester City Team News:

Speaking on Friday Pep revealed that Rodri will be out indefinitely, stating “No news. He is not ready for tomorrow. I don’t know when he will be back”. Rodri was originally expected to be sidelined with a hamstring injury for 2-3 weeks. Pep Guardiola stated “It’s muscular. Of course I don’t want to lose him [at all] because he is such an important player. We tried to take care of him, but it is what it is. This is why we tried to be gentle and play [him] for 60-65 minutes”. Nico Gonzalez should be the direct replacement for Rodri until he returns in a few weeks.

Big news for Manchester City, it seems Ait-Nouri and Omar Marmoush both have a good chance of at least being in the squad this weekend. Speaking to the media Pep said “Omar Marmoush and Rayan Ait-Nouri trained yesterday and they are much, much better. They are close to coming back”. Both are most likely to make the bench rather than the starting XI after extended periods out.

Pep speaking on Mateo Kovacic said “maybe 50-60 minutes. He needs quality moment, quality time and quality minutes. It’s important he is back step by step” which indicates Kovacic is in his thoughts to start but I would imagine it’s Nico Gonzalez in the deepest midfield role and Kovacic gets 20-30 minutes off the bench.

Against lesser teams, 2 of Savinho, Doku or Marmoush should and likely will start on the wings. When they are facing better teams, Bernardo may come in to play on the wing.

Khusanov is set to be out 3 weeks after he suffered a foot injury against Arsenal. Guardiola informed the media quite plainly “He will be out for the next three games, I think”. Tough blow for City, the young defender was playing well.

Rayan Cherki has a quadriceps tear and has been ruled out for around 2 months. A big blow to City especially after a slow start to the season and back-to-back losses.

Manchester City Players to Watch:

Rodri: Out 2-3 weeks with a hamstring injury.

Gonzalez: Likely starts in Rodri’s place.

Khusanov: Out for the next game at least.

Marmoush: Should return to the squad against Everton.

Ait-Nouri: Should be in the matchday squad this weekend.

Kovacic: Will be fit and in the squad for Everton.

Savinho: Started last 2 league games.

Stones: Back from injury. Will start either Monaco or Brentford in Dias’ place to allow the captain some rest.

Everton Team News:

Grealish is loan locked for this game as Manchester City are of course his parent club.

Moyes speaking to the media on Friday revealed that “We have Jarrad Branthwaite back on the grass, Merlin Rohl back on the grass. Unfortunately Nathan Patterson picked up an injury in the Under-21 game during the week. We have bits and pieces going on, but all the clubs will be the same”. Good news on the former two, particularly Branthwaite who would be a big upgrade at centre-back. Patterson would have only made the bench anyway.

Dibling started in Dewsbury-Hall’s place against Crystal Palace, and with a big win over a team that was undefeated in their last 19 games, it would stand to reason that Dibling keeps his place with Grealish not allowed to play in this game, rather than Alcaraz coming in to start.

Barry started the last game. It is hard to say if the starting job is his now but after a big win it is safe to assume Moyes will pick those same starters for the most part.

Everton Players to Watch:

Grealish: Loan locked.

Barry: Started over Beto in the 2-1 win vs Crystal Palace.

Keane: Came off against Palace with a rib injury.

Beto: Was benched last game and Everton won. H

Branthwaite: Back training on the grass. Could be in the squad for GW9.

Rohl: Also back training on grass.

Dewsbury-Hall: Returns from suspension

Alcaraz: Will replace Dewsbury-Hall in the starting lineup.
