Leeds vs Tottenham Predicted Lineups, Preview, Odds & Prediction

This is a meeting of two teams who have had somewhat inconsistent beginnings to their seasons but overall both sets of fans and coaches will be fairly pleased with how things have gone so far. Tottenham have looked a new team under Frank when it comes to play style and adaptability game to game in comparison with Ange’s dogmatic approach, and they are a much better defensive team now also. They started off the season in tremendous form, winning 3 of their first 4 games against Burnley, Manchester City and West Ham. Things have cooled off a little of late with draws to Brighton and 20th placed Wolves but overall, there are a lot of positive signs and it looks like Thomas Frank was the right man for this job. Leeds likely feel even better than Spurs do about the start to their season. A successful season for Leeds would simply be avoiding relegation, and with 2 wins and 2 draws already on the board after only 6 games, having played had difficult fixtures so far, they have given themselves a very good shot at doing just that. They are currently 12th in the league, but are tied on points with Chelsea in 8th – did not think I’d be writing that in GW7 during the pre-season. This is a game that Tottenham should win if they are to be serious contenders to finish in the Champions League spots, but Leeds have outdone everyone’s expectations so far and will feel they can continue their hot start at home this weekend.

Premier League Head-to-Head Record:

The head-to-head between these two teams over recent years that Leeds have been in the Premier League have been pretty one sided. Tottenham have won 4 of the last 5 meetings, with Leeds winning one.  Spurs have won the last 4 meetings, and have scored 4 goals in the last 3 games between these two sides. It is important to note these Spurs wins took place in the 21/22 and 22/23 seasons and both clubs employed different Managers at that time.

Leeds Overview and Form:

Leeds have had probably as good of a start to their season as they could have hoped for realistically during pre-season. 2 wins already on the board and sitting 12th after 6 games is solid work and leaves them in good stead in their fight to stay up this season. Overall Leeds have 2 wins over Everton and Wolves, draws against Bournemouth and Newcastle and losses to Arsenal and Fulham. A pretty tough fixture list to start, so to some extent that makes their start even more impressive and sets them up well for when the fixtures become a little easier. Leeds were mere minutes away from a 3rd win of the season last weekend against a flying Bournemouth team, but conceded a stoppage time equaliser. Despite that setback, they are certainly carrying momentum and confidence in to this game against Tottenham.

Leeds will likely need to improve as an attacking unit if they are to avoid a real fight to stay up. Staying up in any circumstances will be a success, and they have had a good start, but they have only scored 6 goals in 6 games and rank 15th in xG. They have overhauled their starting front 3 over recent weeks, so that should be taken into account when assessing Leeds attacking performance so far. The hope of inserting Calvert-Lewin, Aaronson and Okafor in to the starting lineup is that the attacking output improves.

From a defensive standpoint Farke and Leeds fans should be pretty happy with how things have gone so far this season. They have conceded 9 goals in 6 games which is not terrible going for a promoted side who have played mostly top half teams. When you take out the Arsenal game, they have only conceded 4 in the other 5 games. What really backs up that this defensive performance could be sustainable is Leeds having conceded the 8th least xG in the league despite the difficult fixtures.

Leeds will likely face spells of this game playing without the ball and having to dig in, and have shown themselves capable of doing just that. Hitting Spurs on the counter will be key, but difficult with the pace Spurs and quality Spurs have in defence – Farke and Leeds are going to have to find a way to fashion more high quality chances in this game than they have been if they want to get anything from it.

Tottenham Overview and Form:

Tottenham started off the season hot, with 3 wins out of their first 4 games including beating Man City, but have cooled off a little after consecutive draws. Still, it’s been a very positive beginning to the Frank era overall with Tottenham sitting 4th, with only 1 loss so far this season at the hands of Bournemouth. Their comeback from 2-0 to take a point against Brighton in GW5 was potentially a positive but a draw to 20th placed Wolves last weekend was certainly points dropped. Frank and his team will look to get the momentum back with a win they are expected to get against promoted opposition.

Where Frank has made the biggest change and difference to Tottenham is with the team’s commitment to being improved defensively and out of possession. The suicidal high line has been replaced by much smarter and adaptable defensive principles and better pressing structures. There is just more attention to detail in this area under Thomas Frank. Bringing in Palhinha to play along with Sarr in midfield has also made a big difference. The improved environment that this has all created for the defenders has allowed all of them to play to near enough their ceiling, and all of them are having good seasons. They have only conceded 4 goals this season which trails only Arsenal and Palace, and it’s strong foundation for Frank to build from.

From an attacking standpoint, Spurs have overperformed their underlying metrics and this is likely the area they will need to improve as they play more difficult opponents. They have scored 11 goals in 6 games which is very good going, but that has come from 7xG as a team, which ranks only 11th in the league. The teams they have faced are also a factor, with 3 of their 6 games coming against Burnley, West Ham and Wolves who are all strong relegation candidates. Kudus and Richarlison has been excellent and Simons has looked bright, and with Solanke returning soon, this attack could and probably should continue to gel and improve.

This is another game where Frank needs to show he understands he manages a big club with a talent advantage, and he should set his team out to be on the front foot, to control the ball and possession and to press high when they lose it, and build the pressure until Leeds crack. Once they are ahead, they can look to control the game and minimise risk. 3 points against a promoted team needs to be a banker if this Spurs team are serious about finishing top 5.

Leeds Team News:

An unchanged starting XI for Leeds from their last 2 Premier League games.

First choice goalkeeper Perri has not yet returned to team training, and is unlikely to be fit to start this weekend, but could be back for GW8.

Gnonto missed last weekends game against Bournemouth after picking up a knock, but Daniel Farke said he hoped to have him back in team training this week to be fit for Tottenham.

Calvert-Lewin has surpassed Nmecha and Piroe in the pecking order and is Leeds’ starting striker now. Aaronson and Okafor have leapfrogged James and Harrison and are now the two preferred starting wingers.

Longstaff’s place in the starting lineup over Tanaka seems quite secure now.

Leeds Players to Watch:

Perri: Has not returned to team training yet.

Darlow: Will start as long as Perri is out.

Calvert-Lewin: Now Leeds’ starting striker.

Gnonto: Could return to training this week.

Tottenham Team News:

Thomas Frank in his Friday press conference revealed “Romero is fit and available and he will start tomorrow. That is promising news. There was a contact to the foot, and the medical did a good job to get him turned around, so trained and ready for tomorrow”. Excellent news for Frank, Spurs and Romero FPL owners all around.

Frank also had updates on Solanke and Kolo Muani. He stated “Dom was a minor procedure to the foot, it went well. So that’s good. In terms of the time frame, we will know more after the international break… [Randal] Kolo Muani has been on the pitch the last two days, so that is very positive”. Kolo Muani should make the bench this weekend against Leeds.

Sarr returned from his knock with a cameo off the bench against Wolves. He then started against Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday. He will start against Leeds.

Palhinha was rested against Glimt, likely for him to start against Leeds.

Udogie and Spence started at full-back last weekend against Wolves. That indicates that Spence is the full-back Frank feels he has to start in league games, because it was Porro who was dropped so Udogie could start, with Spence shifting to right-back. Definitely a hit on Porro’s FPL value if that is the case.

Tottenham Players to Watch:

Romero: Is fit and will start according to Frank.

Udogie: Started last weekend, and was taken off against Glimt while Porro played the full 90. Should start again.

Spence: Potentially first name on the teamsheet out of the 3 top full-backs.

Bergvall: Instantly brought the balance to the midfield that was missing against Bournemouth, and played well. Should start.

Palhinha: Seems to be the first choice DM over Bentancur and will start. Was rested against Glimt while Bentancur started.

Simons: Spurs first choice LW.

Kolo Muani: Dealing with a dead leg. Frank hoped he could be fit for Glimt but he did not make the squad, but should against Leeds.

Leeds vs Tottenham Preview & Predicted Score:

Leeds will set up with their standard 4-3-3 as will Tottenham. May the better men win.

Tottenham should look to take the game to Leeds and attempt to dominate this game in possession, and control proceedings. Kudus, Simons and Richarlison should be able to cause Leeds issues and if Spurs can get ahead they can look to manage the game.

Leeds will have to defend compactly and be dogged out of possession for stretches of this game, but if they can win duels and muck this game up they can stop Tottenham building a rhythm and confidence and can make the game more transitional, and therefore more of a coin toss.

I think Tottenham’s quality, talent and coaching advantage all show up in this game, and Arsenal showed that once you do go ahead you can rack up goals on a Leeds defence that has mostly been very solid. Spurs should be able to get ahead and then control proceedings in this one, a strong Tottenham defence should be able to handle Leeds’ forward line.

Score Prediction: Leeds 0-2 Tottenham
