Our GW6 Tottenham vs Wolves vs predicted lineups, preview, team overviews, H2H record, betting odds and predicted score!
This is a matchup between two teams seemingly headed in completely different directions. Tottenham have started their new era under Thomas Frank very well, with 3 wins over Burnley, Manchester City and West Ham, and fought back from 2-0 down last weekend at the Amex against Brighton to come away with a point. Their only loss came to Bournemouth who have been one of the best teams in the league through 5 games. Wolves on the other hand are the only team in the division who have lost all 5 league games and currently sit on 0 points. It is hard to see past them being relegated this season, although a returning Strand Larsen and a win against Everton in the EFL Cup on Tuesday does provide a glimmer of hope. Can Wolves secure their first points of the season or will Spurs continue proving they will beat bad teams handily and continue their great start under Frank?

Fixture: Tottenham vs Wolves
Stadium: Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Date: Saturday 27th September
Kick-off: 8:00pm BST
The recent head-to-head results between these two teams are a little shocking. Tottenham have not won a single one of the last 5 league meetings between these two teams. They have not beating Wolves in the league since August 2022. This game usually produces goals, the last 4 meetings have produced a minimum of 3 goals. Overall, over the last 5 meetings, Wolves have won 4 of them and there has been 1 draw.

The Thomas Frank era has started really well and Tottenham look like a completely different side to the one that finished 17th under Ange last season. They look so much more solid defensively and committed to the details out of possession, and are generally a much more difficult prospect for teams to go up against under Frank. Through 5 games, they have won 3 games against Burnley, Manchester City and West Ham, have lost to a top Bournemouth team and drew vs Brighton last weekend. They will go in to this game against last placed Wolves with confidence and the expectation being nothing less than a win as they look to cement themselves as a true contender to finish top 5.
Where Thomas Frank has made the biggest difference has been out of possession and defensively for Tottenham, where they look so much more organised, on a string and committed to that side of the ball across the pitch, not just with the defence. Palhinha has been a breath of fresh air, providing brilliant cover for the defence which has accentuated the talents of the likes of Romero, Van de Ven and Spence. Richarlison being the starting striker is largely due to his commitment to lead the press and put in the hard yards off the ball. This is a new identity for Spurs. They have conceded only 3 goals in 5 games and have kept 3 clean sheets this season and will look to add to that this weekend.
Spurs are still clicking in to gear under Frank from an attacking perspective. Xavi Simons has only played 2 games after joining late in the window and Kolo Muani has not played at all. It also took Frank losing to Bournemouth to realise the Palhinha, Bentancur, Sarr midfield doesn’t offer enough on the ball. But as Simons and Kolo Muani bed in, and with the midfield 3 having better balanace, and Solanke returning, I expect Spurs attack to continue to improve. They have scored 10 goals from 5 games which is very good going, but are only 10th in xG through 5 games, which does show their chance creation levels right now are around average. I expect that to improve which means their goal scoring rate won’t regress to the mean.
I expect Spurs to look to control possession and look to play with the ball in this game, and to be very front footed. Pressing high, looking to establish territory in Wolves half, and dominating possession and chance creation, and hopefully win the game comfortably. Wolves are the worst team in the league through 5 games and are leaking goals and not providing much of a threat to opponents goal, and Spurs must win, and should do it by looking and playing like the far superior team.
Wolves have had the worst possible start to the season that any team could have had, literally. They have lost all 5 of their games so far this season and have been poor both defensively and going forward. Things were always going to be tough after losing Cunha and Ait-Nouri but Vitor Pereira showed he is a good coach last season and they won all 4 games Cunha was suspended for after the incident in the FA Cup last season. But that did not carry in to this season clearly, and things need to change and fast if Wolves are to stay up. They were last relegated in the 11/12 season, so it would be the end of a near 14 year run in the Premier League.
Defensively Wolves have been a disaster despite playing a back-5 plus 2 combative midfielders in front. They have conceded the most xG in the league and only West Ham have conceded more actual goals. The only possible hope is Vitor Pereira finding a starting XI that has the right profiles and balance to allow this Wolves defence to improve because there isn’t improved defensive personnel on the way.
Without Strand Larsen for much of the season, Wolves attack has been muted. They have failed to score in 3 games, have only scored 3 goals total in 5 league games and currently sit 17th in xG. Strand Larsen does return for this matchup vs Tottenham which is huge, as he started the season off in great form scoring a brace in his last game played in the EFL Cup vs West Ham.
Wolves will of course try to be compact, sharp into tackles and duels, and defend with a mid block at times and a low block when they come under real pressure, and try to hit on the counter with Strand Larsen, Fer Lopez, Gomes and Munetsi. It’s a gameplan that could work, but it is just hard to see this Wolves team in their current form getting a result away from home against a good Tottenham team.

Speaking to the media Friday, Thomas Frank stated “Latest is that everyone that was available from the last league game is available again. In midweek Pape [Matar Sarr] was out as a precaution, he’s trained today so that’s a positive. [Randal] Kolo Muani’s dead leg is dragging on, he’ll be out for a few more days. Dom [Solanke] is not available… Dominic’s ankle injury has been a little bit tricky. It’s not too big. Hopefully he’ll be back quick. It’s not perfect but we are going forward in the right direction”.
Good news for Sarr’s availability from Frank there. He will start. Kolo Muani and Solanke are obviously out but neither was going to start anyway.
Udogie vs Spence is a battle of two top left-backs. I think Spence has earned the right for that job to be his but Udogie was excellent in his first start this season vs Brighton last weekend. Given Spence started the EFL Cup game, it would stand to reason Udogie will start vs Wolves on Saturday.
Palhinha scored vs Doncaster from CB, and should start alongside Sarr and Bergvall. Simons also started vs Wolves, in midfield, but he will start at LW against Wolves this weekend.
As I believed going in to last weekends game, Frank found out against Bournemouth that the Palhinha and Bentancur double pivot with Sarr is a midfield whose strengths are out of possession rather than in possession, and Bergvall in for Bentancur fixes that. Frank did exactly that, going with a midfield 3 of Palhinha, Bergvall and Sarr. He will likely play the same midfield this weekend, given Bentancur started in Palhinha’s place against Villarreal midweek in the Champions League. Spurs midfield options are limited with Kulusevski and Maddison injured.
Udogie: Spence has taken his starting spot.
Spence: Will start despite Udogie’s return
Bergvall: Instantly brought the balance to the midfield that was missing against Bournemouth, and played well. Should start.
Palhinha: Seems to be the first choice DM over Bentancur and will start. Got to rest in midweek as Bentancur started.
Richarlison: Did not start in GW4 but that was due to players away with the Brazilian NT returning to England late and not getting to train with their teams. Will start against Brighton.
Simons: Will start at LW.
Johnson: No longer a starter with Simons’ arrival.
Kolo Muani: Ramping up fitness, won’t start for a few weeks in all likelihood.

Strand Larsen returned from his spell out injured against Everton in the EFL Cup on Tuesday. He started and played 68 minutes and got through the game without issue. He will start against Tottenham on Saturday.
Speaking on Strand Larsen’s fitness on Friday, Pereira stated “We are trying to go step by step with him. Tomorrow we’ll see. His condition is not 100% for 90 minutes, we must manage the time he can play”. He will start but likely only play 60-70 minutes at most.
I think Lopez will keep his starting spot in one of the 10 roles, and the other is between Munetsi and Bellegarde. Given Munetsi scored against Everton, I lean Muntesi.
Krejci scored against Leeds last weekend and should partner Gomes in midfield. He will compete with Bellegarde and Andre for that spot but I think it’s his as things stand.
Strand Larsen: Returned against Everton in the EFL Cup game on Tuesday. Will start on Saturday.
Munetsi: Would think he starts over Bellegarde in the left 10 role given he scored against Everton.
Krejci: Scored against Leeds last weekend and should start over Andre and Bellegarde.
Tottenham will play their standard 4-3-3 that they have under Thomas Frank so far in his tenure, and Wolves will play their standard 3-4-2-1 that they always have done under Vitor Pereira.
Tottenham should and likely will dominate possession, establish territory in Wolves half of the pitch and control proceedings. They should dominate areas like chance creation, shots on goal and eventually, the scoreline. Wolves will naturally look to defend deep, compactly and as a team, and try to keep Spurs out for as long as they can and hit them on the counter.
Despite their likely best efforts, given the desperation that comes with being 20th in the league, I think the talent gap between these two sides, with the good form Spurs are in, now guided by a top manager in Thomas Frank, will be too much for Wolves to overcome. I think Frank will be wanting his players and his team to show they’re not the same old Spurs and they comfortably win the games they should. With Strand Larsen back I think Wolves can nick a goal but Spurs should have too much at home.
